Title of Art Piece: See in a Bit! Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design Student/Artist’s Name: Wayland Roys School: South Anchorage High School Grade: 11th Artist Statement: This piece was used to represent the physical analogy of walking away from someone in life, but it presenting new and exciting opportunities, not being an end-all be-all situation. By taking separate "hiking paths", each skeleton will see new sights, meet new people along the way, and experience new memories, all while holding a deeper emotional connection with the other. This inquiry was used as a smaller representation for the overall idea of love striving in hardship, but blossoming and growing nevertheless. Artwork Dimensions: 11.8" High x 13.4" Wide Additional Images: Adjudicate Artwork
Title of Art Piece: Ridin’ Free Category: Painting Student/Artist’s Name: Veronica Bogdziewicz School: South Anchorage High School Grade: 11th Artist Statement: In this painting, the horses are breaking free from their pin and racing along the open landscape symbolizing their pursuit of freedom and liberation. The untamed spirit of the horses is captured by their movement in the painting. Also the vastness of the landscape embraces the idea of endless possibilities signifying their freedom. In contrast the presence of the cowboys introduces the ides of control between them and the horses. Artwork Dimensions: 20 inches High x 16 inches Wide Additional Images: Adjudicate Artwork
Title of Art Piece: Kayc & Flowers Category: Photography Student/Artist’s Name: Mayrilin Martinez School: Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School Grade: 10th Artist Statement: When thinking about what I wanted when creating this image I wanted to draw something on my model's face that would define a fun vibe. I wanted to capture my model’s side profile, because it was something she felt comfortable and most confident with. Artwork Dimensions: 11"x15" Additional Images: Adjudicate Artwork
Title of Art Piece: Juicy Tomato Category: Painting Student/Artist’s Name: Chloe Romerdahl School: South Anchorage High School Grade: 11th Artist Statement: I created this tempera painting of a fresh tomato using the color compliments of green and red. White was used to create lighter tones; however the combination of red and green created the darker tones. The water drops intrigued me the most and helped to add a textural complexity. I also focused on the lighting and reflection of the droplets. My goal was to develop an image to appear as realistic as possible and capture the freshness of the moment for this tomato. Title of Art Piece: Creation Myth Category: Painting Student/Artist’s Name: Shayla Mazer School: West Valley High School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: Acrylic paints on watercolor paper For my reference for this painting, I used a photo of myself taking a nap at age 6ish. I was struck by the vulnerability of the image, and it inspired me to wonder about how much of my worldview today came from my dreams as a child. By making myself both a huge figure in a landscape of trees and rivers and just a little girl sleeping in bed, I wanted to evoke the importance of the self in our perception of the world, and how my conception of myself at a young age served as a foundation…
Title of Art Piece: Ellen and Grandma – I Know the End Category: Mixed Media Student/Artist’s Name: Ellen Whip School: South Anchorage High School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: This mixed media art piece is a representation of a song from the album "Punisher" by Phoebe Bridgers. The song "I Know the End" is about questioning religion, coming to terms with mortality, and leaving behind old ways or belief systems within your lineage. I typed out specific song lyrics onto watercolor paper. From there I glued them onto the pencil and charcoal drawing of my grandma and myself. The other words are her handwriting from the original photo of us. Artwork Dimensions: 8 Inches High x 13 Inches Wide Additional Images: Adjudicate Artwork
Title of Art Piece: The Rabbit That Lived the Longest Category: Printmaking Student/Artist’s Name: Sierra Mullikin School: Homer High School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: This project is a multimedia piece made of a mokulito print and some watercolor. Mokulito is a process of printmaking where a design is drawn or painted on a piece of wood with a medium that collects the ink, which is then transferred over to paper. I strengthened my lines with watercolor after I printed, and then colored in some of the details with thin layers of color. The rabbit is a thin yellowish-green color, and the surrounding details like the leaves and acorn are their natural tones. I'm a big fan of mythical creatures, and a whimsical antlered rabbit…
Title of Art Piece: Her Jeep Category: Drawing Student/Artist’s Name: Rylee Lyon School: Joe Redington Sr. Jr/Sr High School Grade: 11th Artist Statement: This art piece was inspired by my mother, who used to drive a bright red jeep. Everyone would recognize her on the road whenever she drove and tell me about it. She sold it, but I wanted a piece to remember it by, so I drew it as realistically as possible in colored pencil. Artwork Dimensions: 9" wide x 12" high Additional Images: Adjudicate Artwork
Title of Art Piece: Lookin’ Fly Category: Drawing Student/Artist’s Name: Iselin Swalling School: Joe Redington Sr. Jr/Sr High School Grade: 10th Artist Statement: This piece is a magnified view of a bug's eye with a focus on hyper-realism and color expression. Title of Art Piece: The Infinite Procession Category: Jewelry / Metalsmithing Student/Artist’s Name: EJ Castro School: Service High School Grade: 10th Artist Statement: In full honesty, this is probably one of my favorite pieces I’ve made and will make. This piece required many different techniques that were new to me. Making the coffin was the most problematic but a fun learning experience. I had to design the hinge for it to open close, solder all the parts together, and add the surrounding chains to lock it up. Overall, I am happy with the outcome and I enjoyed the process of making this piece. Artwork Dimensions: 9 inches high X 6 inches wide Additional Images: Adjudicate Artwork

Title of Art Piece: Rainbow Lorikeet Category: Mixed Media Student/Artist’s Name: Anna Rock School: Petersburg High School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: I was inspired by the vibrant, eye-catching colors of Rainbow Lorikeets while making this piece. I also incorporated a few flowers based on one of the Lorikeet's natural food sources, the Weeping Boer-Bean, in an attempt to tie everything together. The bird was painted using bright acrylics to help it to stand out against the background and frame, which had colored with duller paints to hopefully accentuate that effect. I had an amazing time experiencing paper machè as a medium, as well as different clays while sculpting the beak, nostrils, and eyes! I also incorporated some fun leaf beads from Mrs. Lohr's classroom…
Title of Art Piece: Southeast Sea Life Category: Mixed Media Student/Artist’s Name: Alicia Kittams School: Petersburg High School Grade: 11th Artist Statement: I was inspired to make this artwork by the diverse array of marine life we have here in southeast Alaska. I wanted to make something vibrant and nonrealistic that still brought in the concept of marine diversity with it. For this project I used clay and glaze to make the fish, and attached them to the driftwood using metal hooks, glue, and fishing line. I started by reclaiming my clay which I then sculpted into fish one at a time. After they were bisque fired, I glazed them. Once out of the kiln I glued on three hooks to the back of…
Title of Art Piece: My Best Friend Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design Student/Artist’s Name: Quinn Raferty School: Petersburg High School Grade: 10th Artist Statement: To create this piece, I was heavily inspired by gouache and watercolor portraits, as well as my admiration for my best friend. This piece is digital, and for me, the exploration was in the realistic gouache brush I used, as well as the process of doing pretty much the entire piece on just one layer. For this artwork, I used a reference photo taken on an old digital camera, so sometimes it was difficult to pick out specific colors and values because of the low quality image. This piece went through a, frankly scary, rough phase in the beginning…
Title of Art Piece: Fading Coral Category: Drawing Student/Artist’s Name: Daisy Cardoso School: Joe Redington Sr. Jr/Sr High School Grade: 11th Artist Statement: This artwork is a visual representation of individual struggles with addiction to smoking, drugs, etc. The work itself is a colorful piece of coral, with each layer painted and colored with colored pencils to bring out finer details. From the beginning of the first layer to the last, the coral's color fades. This symbolizes the individual's innocence and sense of reality; the turtle, when it is deep in its addiction and can’t get out of it. Title of Art Piece: Idja Váile Åppås By Aili Jensen Category: Mixed Media Student/Artist’s Name: Aili Jensen School: Homer HIgh School Grade: 10th Artist Statement: “Night of untouched snow” This piece depicts two young Sami girls engulfed by a snowy forest with paper star lanterns brightening up the girls with a few hiding in the dark forest. The Sami people are the indigenous people of northern Europe and many don't know about them. My ancestors were Sami and I have a lot of pride in my ethnicity. I made a parody of the painting Carnation Lily, Lily Rose by John Singer Sargent. I love his work and really wanted to add a part of myself to my painting. I want people to learn about…
Title of Art Piece: Tiger & Gecko Sgraffito Bowls Category: Ceramics Student/Artist’s Name: Natalie Farren School: Homer High School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: The inspiration behind my ceramic work originated from an artist local to my area named Jeff Szarzi. He uses a mainly black and white sgraffito, which pictures Alaska’s wildlife and beauty. A goal I had was to create bowls that were not only visually appealing, but also easy to eat out of. Which is something that Szarzi does very well in order for his pieces to be functional for everyday use. In contrast to his work, my bowls are themed around a rainforest/jungle ecosystem. I wanted the tiger and gecko to be the main figures, while the matching landscape bowls complimented…
Title of Art Piece: Northern Lights Category: Painting Student/Artist’s Name: Kathrine Connie Tazruk School: Alak School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: The reason I was motivated to make the Northern Lights was mainly to express our cultural and traditional lifestyle. The northern lights piece was made to admire our skies and how they guide us in hunting and traveling. The beauty that it gives us, the light in the dark, and the grace of their motions. The trees give us stability, to build endless supplies, and the home of those that roam in the sky and on the ground, simply to see the meaning and importance of our resources. Artwork Dimensions: 10 in x 7.8 in Additional Images: Adjudicate Artwork
Title of Art Piece: Oil Pastel Category: Drawing Student/Artist’s Name: Willow Hinsberger School: Homer High School Grade: 10th Artist Statement: While making this I had no idea it would turn out the way it has, but my work tends to turn out green. It’s not that I don't enjoy the color, but they aren't the mountains I was imagining while making the project. They are still mountains, and that's enough. All the people I know have let the mountains fade into the background of their daily lives, and I must have too while making this. I hope as I continue to create mountains they will become more like the mountains I see. Artwork Dimensions: 10"X14.5" Additional Images: Adjudicate Artwork
Title of Art Piece: Purple Mountains Category: Painting Student/Artist’s Name: Willow Hinsberger School: Homer High School Grade: 10th Artist Statement: I didn't have anything particular in my mind while painting this; I just wanted to see what I could make with the resources I had on hand. Now that I reflect on the choices and elements I used, I can recall my memory of the place. While I don't particularly remember where this place is, I can still remember the ice cream shop, the trees, and the way the air felt. I know that the mountains weren't purple, unless they were, and there was a lake, not a river, but it's still the same place to me. Artwork Dimensions: 7"X5" Additional Images: …
Title of Art Piece: Baleen Sketching Category: Drawing Student/Artist’s Name: Kathrine Connie Tazruk School: Alak School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: The reason I was motivated to make the Baleen Sketching drawing was mainly to express our cultural and traditional lifestyle. Title of Art Piece: Skittles and Bowls Category: Sculpture Student/Artist’s Name: Andrea Phyllis Kippi School: Alak School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: I made the clay Skittles because they are colorful. I want to make something temporary feel permanent. It makes you think about how fast the things we enjoy can disappear. I created the bowls mainly to hold my yummy Skittles. Title of Art Piece: The New Colossus Category: Painting Student/Artist’s Name: Alana Clements School: Mat- Su Central Grade: 12th Artist Statement: This was an interpretation of what I think The Statue of Liberty means today. Part of our prompt was to imagine ourselves being the model for the statue – what would our body language/posture be? We also read part of Emma Lazarus' poem that was an invitation to refugees. I don't think she still represents our current foreign and domestic polices. Artwork Dimensions: 14' x 17" Additional Images: Adjudicate Artwork
