Strips

April 6, 2022 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Strips
Category: Mixed Media – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Genevieve Simono
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

I split my face in half, using pinks and greens with a high contrast purplle. Cutting, gluing, sewing & stitching over several weeks in the studio was a tiring process at times but I had fun making it. I didn’t have a real plan or idea behind my work other than pretty contrast and blocky light values on the face to make something cool. I hoped this piece would make me proud and be something I could spend a lot of time on. I’ll probably put it on my wall. I always struggle with self portraits (looking at my own face makes me anxious) using extreme colors and a difficult perspective helped me get through that. Creating has been a passion of mine since I was little and I hope this or anything I’ve made touches someone enough to make them smile.

Tanner

April 6, 2022 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Tanner
Category: Mixed Media – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Tanner Kappel
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

My art work is self portrait of myself made out of cloth. Mrs. Holler asked us to take a picture of ourselves then to separate the darks from the lights on our clothes and faces. We had to find cloth that fits the colors we want and how dark we wanted them to be then we stitched them together. I usually just draw something then out line it then thicken the lines in front then color. But I do think it turned out pretty good for my first time though. The idea behind the art work is to look at it and see a person who looks like me. I know there’s no eyes no lips no nose but you can kind of see me.

Mushrooms

April 6, 2022 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Mushrooms
Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Emma Kinmon
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

In my artwork “Mushrooms” I painted a type of turkey tail mushroom growing on a tree. I chose a vibrant dark shade of blue based on the variety of turkey tail and to show contrast between that on the bark. I wanted to experiment a lot with the textures of the wood, to add more interest I used a variety of shades of brown. I knew from the beginning I wanted the mushrooms to break the border to make it feel a little more whimsical. My artwork is on mixed media paper done with watercolor, fine liners, and colored pencils. I’ve always been inspired by nature and fascinated by mushrooms especially based on the variety of types. They play an important part in our ecosystem so I made them the focus of the work.

Summer Portrait

Title of Art Piece: Summer Portrait
Category: Mixed Media – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Milly Gumley
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

For this piece of artwork I was Required to use only fabric and unrealistic colors to patch something to life. This was very unusual for me because I’m very used to using natural colors and staying inside my comfort zone, however I’m very happy with the results! The contrasting colors cause the portrait to really pop and the tiny threading adds the details. This art reminded me of summer and It was very fun to see the portrait slowly being pieced together and to experiment with something I’ve never done before.

Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Milina Trofimovich
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This piece was created with a horizontal triangle composition. It draws your eye from the cloudy swirls to the surroundings or the character. The character is just an axolotl wizard with flowers trailing behind them and the staff having the clouds come out of them. The style used was experimental and inspired from artists I follow.

Antler, Flowers, and Shell

April 6, 2022 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Antler, Flowers, and Shell
Category: Drawing – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Yuliya Barashkina
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

In this drawing, I took deep inspiration from an artist named Georgia O’Keeffe. I enjoy looking at her art because she uses nature as her main inspiration for her art and I can relate to that. Nature is something I care about a lot and hopefully my artwork can show off certain parts of nature that I find to be beautiful, as well as spread a message about the importance of nature.
What I liked about drawing this piece was discovering new methods to draw things. I feel that no matter how long an artist has been involved in making his artwork, you can always find new ways and methods to make things a lot easier.
Overall, drawing this was a delightful experience. It helped me discover new methods in drawing and helped me a lot with my shading. It was also nice to draw something I truly care about and that is nature. I am hoping my artwork can at least touch someone’s heart and make them see the same thing I do when it comes to nature.

Chill Out

April 6, 2022 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Chill Out
Category: Mixed Media – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Avari Hays
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I wanted to represent the feeling of being overwhelmed. I chose to title this painting “Chill Out” because that is what I get told most often when I am feeling overwhelmed but it never helps. The girl shown is painted in multiple colors. She is portrayed this way because frequently, when overwhelmed, a multitude of emotions are felt at once like sadness, weariness, and anger. The subject is wearing a school uniform to show how school can add a lot of stress to an individual’s life. The uniform shows how, even in the midst of immense pressure, she attempts to look “put together.” The background is filled with segments of a local newspaper in my town called The Frontiersman. Articles describing landfills, Covid-19 cases, and police reports highlight how events in your community can feel devastating, especially for the youth. I outlined the subject and words like landfill, testing, and hospitalization in red to portray an atmosphere of urgency and anxiety surrounding her. I feel that this painting touches on the struggles teenagers face in the world today.

Discover Yourself

April 17, 2022 ASAA

3rd Place – Communication Arts / Graphic Design

Title of Art Piece: Discover Yourself
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Lisa Henneaux
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My artwork is showing different places and types of people, plants, animals, landscapes. There is a lot going on on the paper but every part of it is connected to the other.
To make this piece I only used black and white papers, a pair of scissors to cut my black paper and a glue stick to glue it to the white paper. Then, I glued the white paper on a big piece of black paper as a background.
This work is inspired by my discovery of myself. It’s related to how I grew, the things that I like or that I’ve experienced.
My goal for this piece was to make it very detailed and harmonic and to express something personal at the same time.
This piece took me quite a bit of time but I learned patience and preciseness while doing it. It turned out better than I imagined it at first.

Don’t Touch Me

April 19, 2022 ASAA

1st Place – Mixed Media

Title of Art Piece: Don’t Touch Me
Category: Mixed Media – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Avari Hays
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

My painting titled “Don’t Touch Me” was inspired by the emotion of anger. This piece is painted on a pane of glass. A man is shown yelling with tears flowing and broken glass is shown shooting from his mouth. I achieved this by breaking a separate pane of glass and gluing the remaining pieces on the original pane of glass directed towards the hand reaching out. This implies that the gentleness of another is met with hostility and brutality. I used acrylic paint and chose to paint the man’s skin tone in darker shades than the hand to create a contrast from light to dark and warmth to coldness. He is wearing a red button-up and a blue shirt underneath. This is meant to represent anger masking sadness. The subject is uncomfortable with the vulnerability that comes with showing his sadness so instead, he disguises it as anger. The man is burdened and this is represented by the pieces of media displayed in the background. I glued newspaper clippings, utility bills, and covid-19 forms onto the back of the glass because it can cause anger to have many obligations expected of you and the tumultuous events that are going on worldwide currently can be a source for animosity. The hand is reaching out despite the turmoil the man is going through and represents care and comfort in the midst of anger and stress. This piece is very personal to me because it represents how at times, my anger can push the people I love most away and how important it is to recognize that there are people who care and want to comfort you.
