Title of Art Piece: Ellen and Grandma – I Know the End Category: Mixed Media Student/Artist’s Name: Ellen Whip School: South Anchorage High School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: This mixed media art piece is a representation of a song from the album "Punisher" by Phoebe Bridgers. The song "I Know the End" is about questioning religion, coming to terms with mortality, and leaving behind old ways or belief systems within your lineage. I typed out specific song lyrics onto watercolor paper. From there I glued them onto the pencil and charcoal drawing of my grandma and myself. The other words are her handwriting from the original photo of us. Artwork Dimensions: 8 Inches High x 13 Inches Wide   Additional Images:    Adjudicate Artwork

  • Rainbow Lorikeet

Title of Art Piece: Rainbow Lorikeet Category: Mixed Media Student/Artist’s Name: Anna Rock School: Petersburg High School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: I was inspired by the vibrant, eye-catching colors of Rainbow Lorikeets while making this piece. I also incorporated a few flowers based on one of the Lorikeet's natural food sources, the Weeping Boer-Bean, in an attempt to tie everything together. The bird was painted using bright acrylics to help it to stand out against the background and frame, which had colored with duller paints to hopefully accentuate that effect. I had an amazing time experiencing paper machè as a medium, as well as different clays while sculpting the beak, nostrils, and eyes! I also incorporated some fun leaf beads from Mrs. Lohr's classroom…

  • Southeast Sea Life

Title of Art Piece: Southeast Sea Life Category: Mixed Media Student/Artist’s Name: Alicia Kittams School: Petersburg High School Grade: 11th Artist Statement: I was inspired to make this artwork by the diverse array of marine life we have here in southeast Alaska. I wanted to make something vibrant and nonrealistic that still brought in the concept of marine diversity with it. For this project I used clay and glaze to make the fish, and attached them to the driftwood using metal hooks, glue, and fishing line. I started by reclaiming my clay which I then sculpted into fish one at a time. After they were bisque fired, I glazed them. Once out of the kiln I glued on three hooks to the back of…

  • Bloom

Title of Art Piece: Bloom Category: Mixed Media Student/Artist’s Name: McKinleigh Wood School: Wasilla High School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: With Bloom, I wanted to showcase symbolism and connection. The telephone wire symbolizes the connection we all have with each other, going off far into the unseeable distance. So do the stars on everyone's faces other than the face of the main subject. They have all connected with each other, but they're not intentionally avoiding her. She just hasn't connected with them yet. I also wanted to display a mix between watercolors, acrylic, and differing amounts of detail so the main points of the drawing really stand out from the rest. • Alone in the Crowd

Title of Art Piece: Alone in the Crowd Category: Mixed Media Student/Artist’s Name: Kaitlyn Prink School: Wasilla High School Grade: 11th Artist Statement: My work showcases a person who feels disconnected from their surroundings, the feeling of being alone despite having so much commotion around. This is a great example of how I love depicting situations or feelings in my art, I feel like it gives the art more meaning and connection to the people experiencing it. This art piece ais also an example of my weaknesses in commitment when it comes to perfectionism. The colors are drawn out and light, giving it an airy feeling of being incomplete.       Title of Art Piece: Louie Category: Mixed Media Student/Artist’s Name: Andie Campbell School: Service High School Grade: 10th Artist Statement: In this piece, I had fun working with the bright colors of the oil pastels to contrast the difference between Louie’s dark fur and the warm highlights from the sun. This was one of my first pieces using this medium, so I enjoyed experimenting with different layers and blending techniques to make him feel alive.
