Title of Art Piece: Wanna Be Home
Category: Mixed Media – 2023
Student/Artist’s Name: Arthur Unger
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: My vision for this piece was to create a collaged landscape of rural central Texas. Growing up, my family moved around a lot. However, there was one constant: my grandparent’s ranch in the Texas Hill Country, and they named it “Wannabe Ranch” (it is now called “Legacy Ranch”). It was purchased a few years before I was born, and no matter where in the world or country my family has lived, we have always been able to visit. When I think of home, I don’t think of what house I live in, I think of the ranch.

For this piece, I wanted to capture what I love about central Texas. I began by writing down pieces of my memories, like the sunset, the clear stars at night, the beautiful old buildings, and more. When I was choosing my medium, I decided on a collage of hand-printed and machine-printed materials. My printer has been glitching recently, and I thought the glitching could give some of the photographs my dad has taken of central Texas over the past two decades an interesting effect.
