The Flowers of the Future

April 13, 2012 ASAA

The Flowers of the Future

Title of Art Piece: The Flowers of the Future
Category: Sculpture
Student/Artist’s Name: Kyla Meadows
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 10th

Artist Statement: “To forget how to dig the earth and tend the soil is to forget ourselves.” Gandhi

For my piece I wanted to do something personal, but it was more than that. I wanted to make a piece that would mean something to not just me but to whoever sees it. Our planet is dying, and we are the cause of it. The wild flower fields, which are arguably the most simple, yet beautiful thing in nature, are being replaced with garbage dumps and land fills. So I recreated a pot of flowers with the most common recyclable to show as hard as we may try the beauty of the flowers isn’t man made, its all natural; and if we continue down the path we are on, the recycled can flowers may be the only flowers we will have left.
