Political TV

April 1, 2017 ASAA

(1st Place – Sculpture)

Title of Art Piece: Political TV
Category: Sculpture – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Aidyn Dervaes
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

My piece politic TV has a strong use of iconography. It is about disconnection of people and politics, and the now-existing strong connection between the media and our government. The television represents the media and my statue of liberty is a representation of our country and government. It is about how our country is controlled by media. I made my sculpture large so that the viewer can look into the screen, I created a three minute video containing historical images, accompanied by a count down between every 4-5 three second clips. The ending of the video is ten seconds of television static and then the video picks back up at the begining. Rudolf Baranik was a large inspiration for this piece and his government defying work.

No Looking Up

April 1, 2017 ASAA

(1st Place – Graphic Design)

Title of Art Piece: No Looking Up
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Madeline Ko
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This piece is set in a busy city and gives a visual marker for the focus of all of the people’s attention. The lack of eye contact and positioning away from the viewer makes them feel ignored and, in turn, inclined to return to their own devices. I was influenced by my own experiences traveling in cities, and street artists like “iHeart” who have also criticized society by exaggerating their generation’s social issues through art.

Feelings are the Key Ingredients to Make One Fine Meal

April 1, 2017 ASAA

(1st Place – Painting)

Title of Art Piece: Feelings are the Key Ingredients to Make One Fine Meal
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: River Parpana
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My idea for this painting was to visualize human emotions as an influence to Loui Jover’s ink paintings. We have all expressed our emotions to others to show each other and ourselves how we feel, depending on the situation. I wanted to show these feelings and make a connection to the audience.

Snagged

April 2, 2017 ASAA

(2nd Place – Sculpture)

Title of Art Piece: Snagged
Category: Sculpture – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Brianna Jensen
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I love fishing. Matter of fact I spend about ⅓ of my summer vacation with a rod in my hand. Since I am out in the water so much, I have noticed a reoccurring problem. It is not the little kids chucking rocks into the river, but adults ripping their lines through the water. Snagging can leave a fish disfigured and can affect their way of life. In my project, I wanted to capture the effects of snagging. Particularly on sockeye salmon. I chose to use high gloss spray paint to make my fish look alive. I also used a common object that many people get their hooks caught on, or in this case a piece of wood to support my fish.

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Microwavable
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Jazmyn Caulkins
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This piece was inspired by Pawel Kuczynski’s satirical art about the environment. The microwave represents global warming and the technologie made by humanity that is causing it. The word help on the microwave is to show bad of a situation this is, it is bad enough to be asking for help. The hand is yellow because emoji hands are yellow and emojis area very recognizable and universal part of technologie. The hand is about to press the start button on the microwave because if us humans continue as we are now then the earth will surely die, but if we stop and make changes then there is a chance.

Journey to Self Realization

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Journey to Self Realization
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Ruby Woodings
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

Creating what you look like might defy what others believe you to be. To create this self portrait, the most difficult part was identifying the most outstanding personal traits that truly portrayed myself. After that the process went very smooth. This piece contains symbols that represent things I: enjoy, admire, hate, fear, and define me. Each specific detail somehow connects to me as a person. I used COPIC markers to show my bold personality.

Bloom

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Bloom
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Robin Hoyt
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This piece is inspired by various pop artists. It’s a youthful face blooming out of a chrysanthemum (mum), with the sun shining on its face and petals. It is about the process of becoming a better person and starting over. I chose to work with a flower because plants grow at a very organic/natural pace, which is how humans grow mentally and emotionally also. I wanted to communicate when you let go of negative traits, it improves yourself as a person.

Set of 3 Tea Mugs

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Set of 3 Tea Mugs
Category: Ceramics – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Linnaea Alverts
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

Last semester I made these three mugs as an assignment and discovered how challenging it was to make a mug that was visually pleasing and also practical to use. After having to recycle a mug because I let it dry out too long, I learned I had to pay close attention to the moisture level of my mugs while I added handles and slip work. It was hard to attempt putting the henna and Zen-tangle inspired designs with small slip trailer tips clogged with past user’s clay. After struggling with these fine tips, I had to use a bigger one. Even though my mugs did not go exactly as I pictured in my head, I learned a lot from the process and enjoy using them for tea, coffee and hot chocolate.

Panda

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Panda
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Alma Reyna
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

This was my first time working with pastels and velour paper and I really enjoyed the medium. I chose to work with a subject that had a lot of texture, color and a variety of lights and darks, for example, the grass has contrasting light and dark values. The panda bear has soft fur and with the velour paper and pastels I was able to create soft texture that resembled its fur.

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Get Broke Mustang
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Jaida Vroman
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

I had never used acrylic paint before this piece and I am very happy with using this new medium. I love how much easier it is to work with than watercolor and just the overall richness of color/value. I was able to achieve detail I had never imagined. My reference photo I actually took when I was down in Utah last summer apprenticing with a horse trainer, and to be able to freeze a moment of those memories is really special.

Bowls with Handles

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Bowls with Handles
Category: Ceramics – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Danielle Baker
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

I started out by throwing the bowls on the wheel, and it took a couple of attempts to make each bowl look the same. Then I threw the handles and made about eight of them then chose the ones I thought looked the most alike. I scored and slipped the handles on the bowls. lastly, I glazed each bowl with one color but only glazing the same part on each bowl, let that glaze dry then did the same process two more times with two more glazes.

Stop Feeling Like That

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Stop Feeling Like That
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Jina Malone
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I created a triptych depicting three separate figures. As the pieces progress from left to right, I broke down the complexity of the person. I used this to show emotional extremes and how that could lead to emotional deterioration. I used three different color schemes, two of them being analogous. I used this to show the monotony of emotional extremes. The entire piece relates to the struggle of head vs. heart and the emotions associated with those two things.

Amiguq (Wolf)

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Amiguq (Wolf)
Category: Multicultural Art – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Erin Sherman
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

Amiguq (Wolf), wax, dye, cotton fabric, 81.4 cm 109.5cm
My batik is a Haida wolf that was inspired by David Boxley, a traditional Haida artist. I did a traditional design of the wolf, but instead of having the traditional colors, I used colors that are not found in Native art.
My theme is Native Alaskan Art, this theme is important to me because most of the art is now made by the elders and their apprentices. Most Natives my age do not know their culture from their family because of the B.I.A. formed across Alaska. Our culture is fading now.
