Lone Girl

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Lone Girl
Category: Mixed Media – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Kacie Myers
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This image illustrates a lone girl and her bird walking down an empty street. This is a catharsis work that is meant to portray emotional loneliness in a physical way. I wanted to depict a twilight-like background, because I believe there is a lot of melancholic emotion that accompanies that time of evening. I used Micron ink pens and watercolor pencils in order to create a rainy-day atmosphere.

Heart

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Heart
Category: Mixed Media – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Alexis Smathers
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This design is one that I have been thinking about for a while and just recently decided to make a reality. I wanted the flowers and the heart to contrast each other and to show what is giving the heart “life.” I painted the flowers with warm colors of watercolor paint and used India ink and Micron ink pens on the heart. I wanted to experiment with these mediums and produce something whose message may resonate with those who see it.

Levart of Art

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Levart of Art
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Nathanial Nero
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

In my artwork, Levart of Art, I explored the concept of shifting through different checkpoints in life. They are shown as different panels for different moments in a person’s existence; as a tragic past, a present, and an unclear future soaring across a sea of time. Since time doesn’t move, the background alludes to a time between morning and night. I was motivated to create this image because of my curiosity in the concept of time and by my personal experience with different chapters in my life. I chose acrylic paint because I wanted to experiment with it.

Unicorn

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Unicorn
Category: Jewelry / Metalsmithing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Kim Cinco
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I chose to take a jewelry class because it gives me hands-on skills working with metal and carving. I made this design because I was interested in the unicorn in the middle, which I thought was awesome. I knew that this art project would took me a long time to complete, but I wanted to challenge myself to get better at fretwork sawing. It motivated me to do even more challenging designs in the future. The first thing that I did to make this project was to draw four different designs to choose from. Then I re-drew the design that I picked and glued it onto a copper sheet. I waited for one day for the glue to dry, then I made a hole in the copper and started sawing. It took me about three weeks to finish the entire jewelry project.

Curls

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Curls
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Olivia Kovacs
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

My portrait, Curls, represents an empowered woman with a mysterious side. I am a firm believer that women can be just as empowered and confident as men can be and in this portrait I was inspired to express that passion. The large, cowboy-style hat is meant to give her a mysterious vibe, because it covers her left eye and casts a dark shadow across her face and luxurious curls. Her sharp features show that she is not soft, but rather serious and assertive. The curls are bright and bold and give a nice contrast with the shadows to make her appear more mysterious. The lips are plump and round, to give her an alluring intimacy. I used oil pastel for this portrait because the contrast between dark and light is enhanced and I wanted that effect to take over the majority of the piece.

Student/Artist’s Name: Logan Roe
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

I chose to make a dragon copper fretwork because I love the look of them. I use the image of dragons in all of my artwork, including printmaking, painting, drawing, and pen and ink work. This piece was inspired by the rest of the work I have done in art class

Title of Art Piece: Self Portrait
Category: Mixed Media – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Ellisha Borland
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

I created my self portrait after I went through a series of hardships. Two years ago I lost my father in an accident and for a long time I struggled with learning to cope with this loss. Even though life seemed hopeless to me at one point, I kept pushing myself and eventually made my way to happiness and acceptance.

Sugar Skull

Title of Art Piece: Sugar Skull
Category: Mixed Media – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Ellisha Borland
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

My sugar skull was created to experiment with free-hand drawing and sketching. I also fooled around with mixed media and intricate design. Although it may not look like it, the piece took many hours to complete. My inspiration for this piece was a recent trip to Arizona where I saw many new types of flowers and came across a surprising amount of different candy skull designs. I started by drawing my outline in pencil, then I went over all of the lines in calligraphy pen, and finally, I filled in all of the spaces with watercolor.

The Kiss

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: The Kiss
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Ellisha Borland
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

My piece, The Kiss, was inspired by many things. The painting was partially created to convey my passion for making contrasting colors flow together, but more to express my difficult relationship with a past boyfriend. Although happiness seemed consistent between us to everyone else, we were both very different from each other and often found ourselves to be very unhappy. The people in the painting are supposed to look beautiful, with glowing skin and flowing hair. However, the dark background is meant to exude a sense of feeling lost or hopeless.

Hawaii

Title of Art Piece: Hawaii
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Michaela Wages
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This is an image of Hawaii. I painted this place as an escape from the Alaskan scenery. I wanted to paint something colorful instead of the dull gray you tend to find in Fairbanks, Alaska. The piece took a very, very long time as each leaf was done individually, layer upon layer of paint to cover all of the canvas. Even though it was a lot of work, I absolutely loved painting this image. I adore the way it turned out because it looks exactly as I wanted it to. The vibrancy of the colors and how they meld together is exactly what I was going for.

Title of Art Piece: Kim
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Gilene Cinco
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

In this artwork, I used pastel to draw my brother playing basketball. I chose an image of my brother because we’re really close to each other and I love playing basketball with him. I chose pastel because of the challenge and the fun of it. Whenever I draw, I feel like I’m expressing myself in a way that I can’t with words. And it makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something afterwards. This drawing turned out looking well-blended.

Title of Art Piece: Disney

Student/Artist’s Name: Michaela Wages
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I decided to create this image after I came back from my first visit to Disney World in December of this year. I wanted something to commemorate the craziness of the trip. The bottom of the image is blank because the Disney castle was so pristine and beautiful while the rest of Disney World was chaotic and rushed. Like the trip to Disney, the artwork is beautiful and chaotic.

Self Portrait

Title of Art Piece: Self Portrait
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Creveenz Tangi
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

When I was in second grade, we had a project in which we had to copy something from a book or magazine. I picked a bird from my book. After I finished, my classmates loved it. They said it looked like the picture that I copied. And that’s how I started. My inspiration to draw is probably because of my dad, because he wanted to be an Architect, that was his dream job, but he didn’t become an Architect. I was thinking of becoming an Architect for him. When I look back on my drawings, I can’t believe I did that. It makes me happy that I could do that.

Victorian Sugar Skull

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Victorian Sugar Skull
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Samantha Hohnecker
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

My motivation for completing the art piece that I submitted was to expand my experience with figure drawing and drawing in perspective. This painted captures my skill in drawing a Sugar Skull as a full figure in a space, drawn in perspective. It is a Victorian-themed painting with the simplicity of the dress, the books, and the candles, which show how old the setting is. The blue ceiling gives the viewer a sense of looking at the sky while remaining indoors. Many Victorian buildings had painted ceilings with enormous detail. By placing a sugar skull in a Victorian setting, the viewer realizes that there is life and beauty after death.

Queen Vögel

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Queen Vögel
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Kacie Myers
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I am working toward becoming a game-concept artist and developer. I have spent the past two years mapping out a plotline for a game that I hope to create in the future. This image is the concept art for the main character, Queen Vögel. Queen Vögel is a large cockatiel-esque goddess to the Rigars, a race of bird-based creatures that serve as the primary inhabitants of her world. Wielding her ancient church bell and its infinite chain as her weapon, Queen Vögel’s goal is to save her kingdom from the Rigar titan, Lord Pompeii. I used a computer program called Paint Tool SAI and a drawing tablet to create this digital image.
