Title of Art Piece: Suicide in Alaska
Category: Multicultural Art – 2024
Student/Artist’s Name: Cheyenne Brindac
School: West Anchorage HS
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement: Alaska has a high rate of suicide and it occurs in many rural and urban communities. My piece represents suicide in specifically rural communities in Alaska. The green background represents mossy tundra and the sculptures of this piece is the fish drying rack and a pair of hanging mukluks which represents a victim of suicide. In my culture the word mukluk means a pair of soft boots that would typically be made out of seal skin and caribou or wolf fur. I tied this piece with Alaska Native culture by really bringing in some things that you would see in some cultures of Alaska.
