Artist Statement: I created the piece SPLIT after learning about the famous artist Frida Kahlo. I found her art to be unique and very thought-provoking. I wanted to use that inspiration to create something of my own. The person in the painting is myself, along with my cat. Frida painted her self-portraits with monkeys or deer, so I decided to paint my cat Louise. I have had my cat a year. I split the color between black and white because there is a crack in the wood that divided the painting. I traced the line like it was a root. I wanted to incorporate the natural wood into my design. The painting is meant to convey that certain experiences can both bring you down and uplift you. There is a balance to life. This is only my interpretation, and I would like others to see it in different ways philosophically.
