  • Red Reaction

Title of Art Piece: Red Reaction Category: Drawing Student/Artist’s Name: Karita Anderson School: Juneau Douglas High School Grade: 11th Artist Statement: Originally, this piece was just supposed to be a silly tomato guy, but as I progressed on it I realized it had turned into something more than that. I always thought it looked funny whenever a man turned bright red when angry and thought of the phrase “As red as a tomato,” so I decided to turn that into a piece of artwork. As I worked on this, it got me thinking about people in power and how many of them are used to having everything handed to them, so whenever something doesn’t go their way, they react to it in an extreme…

  • Eye Am Alaska

Title of Art Piece: Eye Am Alaska Category: Painting Student/Artist’s Name: Claire Schneider School: Juneau Douglas High School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: Eye am Alaska reflects my connection to the wildlife and landscapes that shape my identity, using three distinct animal eyes to represent the diversity, resilience, and spirit of the place I call home. Each eye captures a different way of seeing the world—ocean, forest, and land—mirroring the environments that define Alaska’s character and my own experiences growing up here. By focusing on close‑up detail and bold color, I wanted to show how every creature carries a story, and how those stories overlap with my own sense of belonging. This piece is both a tribute to the animals that surround us and a…

  • Kissing The Fire

Title of Art Piece: Kissing The Fire Category: Photography Student/Artist’s Name: Claire Schneider School: Juneau Douglas High School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: This piece reflects my fascination with moments that feel both intimate and volatile, using the small flame of a match to explore how light can expose emotion while hinting at danger. By isolating the mouth and the glow, I wanted to create a scene that feels close enough to be personal yet charged with uncertainty, as if something is about to shift. The warm illumination softens the features even as the fire introduces tension, capturing my interest in how a single spark can transform a quiet moment into one filled with possibility. • Where The Quiet Lives

Title of Art Piece: Where The Quiet Lives Category: Photography Student/Artist’s Name: Claire Schneider School: Juneau Douglas High School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: This piece captures a moment of stillness in a place that feels both vast and deeply personal, reflecting my connection to the quiet, rain‑soaked landscapes that shape life in Alaska. By showing the figure from behind, I wanted to emphasize the feeling of stepping into solitude—of being small in a world that is overwhelmingly alive with mist, color, and movement. The soft greens, wet pavement, and distant hills create a sense of calm introspection, inviting the viewer to imagine their own thoughts in that space. This work is about finding peace in isolation, grounding yourself in nature, and recognizing the beauty…

  • Roe Hunting

Title of Art Piece: Roe Hunting Category: Painting Student/Artist’s Name: Zoey Lam School: Juneau Douglas High School Grade: 12th Artist Statement: This is a painting that will hang at our local salmon hatchery this summer. It is hard enough for these salmon to fight their way upstream to spawn without the Dolly Varden inhaling the eggs as soon as they are laid in their protective rock layer. It is a tough life cycle.
