Red Van

April 16, 2015 ASAA

Red-Van-New
(3rd Place – Printmaking)

Title of Art Piece: Red Van
Category: Printmaking – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Joseph Carr
School: Mat-Su Central
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: The Red Van has sat in the woods next to my childhood home as long as I can remember. It is a retired 1952 Ford radio station panel van. Over the years, it’s red paint has faded and chipped, moss grew over it’s extremities as nature slowly took root. I love this van, and it represents the quiet nobility found in abandoned objects lost in the woods. This etching attempts to catch the essence of the red van and all it means to me,Intaglio Printmaking was the perfect medium use, as it’s innately ancient nature reflects exactly the message I was hoping to get across. The completely analog process was very interesting to go through: touching and manipulating the copper, using mordants and tools to make marks, rendering the image in such a substantive way, then ultimately rolling it through the press taking the first proofs. I then got too manipulate the image even more in ways that would have been impossible to do in the pen and ink medium I was more accustomed to.
