Artist Statement: My goal for this piece was to create bad art because I am, in my nature, a perfectionist. The low pressure-environment that I created for myself while composing this piece allowed me to follow my emotions and make art without putting myself in a box and confining myself to perfection. As a performing dancer myself, I wanted to capture the unmatched feeling of exhilaration that comes when connecting with a person or a group of people on stage.
This piece is the first watercolor painting that I have created to this scale. I painted this impromptu, unlike the art I’ve made in the past, so there was no strict plan. It started from a beautiful reference photo of two contemporary dancers. The repeating elements that create rhythm in this piece are the organic blobs that form the stage light which highlights the dancers in motion. I was inspired by the connection between the two people, and decided that was what I was going to emphasize.
