Artist Statement: For my final project, I decided to do a whale shark theme. I have a whale shark sculpture, coffee mug, a pair of earrings, and a tic-tac-toe board with little whale sharks and cute star fish. I made this decision to create this set because I have always had a love for the ocean and especially whale sharks. They are not whales. They are sharks and the largest fish on the planet. They live in warm waters, and they are endangered. Whale sharks eat plankton. Protecting biodiversity in the oceans is important for the planet’s health. I chose to use my ceramics set as a means of expressing my love for these majestic creatures. I hand built everything. I used cone 06 and 6 glazes. I hope that my collection can bring me joy as I use these pieces in my day-to-day life. I see myself one day on a patio in Australia overlooking the Great Barrier Reef, drinking coffee, wearing my earrings, playing tic-tac toe, and watching the whale sharks.
