Title of Art Piece: Mourning a Fairy Tale
Student/Artist’s Name: Hayley Chapman
School: North Pole High School
Artist Statement: My art piece was inspired by three things; an experiment with graphite, an inspiring pose, and a critique that was going to happen in a few hours that I was missing an art piece for. So all in all, the picture was one last bout of desperation. I had a picture a friend sent me of his sister posed dramatically with her head held low as she sat on the ground. The way it looked was perfect for a picture of someone who was loss or mourning something. I used the picture to create the figure in my own piece, diligently working for five hours straight to create a woman with her large pooling dress with its assortment of folds, a cobblestone floor, and the beginnings of the mirrored background to create the story that would lead to her present state. I managed to finish it over the course of the next week, and I was left with one of my favorite pieces of the semester, ‘Mourning of a Fairytale’.
It has been my only pencil drawing so far this semester, and I tried very hard to push the values and the complexity as much as I could. The folds of the dress was also an experiment to see if I could visualize and recreate the folds of fabric without reference, and I think it turned out to be one of the best features of the drawing.
