Title of Art Piece: Life After Death

Artist Statement: This pen and ink drawing, Life After Death, features the skull of a dear with mushrooms and moss growing from it. The subject of a skull alongside plant life is inspired by the works of Georgia O’Keefe. The moss and mushrooms growing from the skull connect it to my life in Southeast Alaska. I’ve grown up my whole life in and around the woods; these fungi and plants are very familiar to me. The plant growth over the skull also explores the idea of life versus death. To me, it symbolizes something new and beautiful emerging from the ending of another thing. I enjoyed drawing the skull and antlers from observation and then adding my own touch to it. I explored many techniques for adding texture and depth to my drawing, including stippling, hatching, cross-hatching, and more.
