Komodo Dragon

April 5, 2017 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Komodo Dragon
Category: Ceramics – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Cody Weldon
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

When I was a kid I was fascinated by dinosaurs, and since they have been extinct for 65 million years, the komodo dragon is the best I can get. My ceramics teacher assigned a slab mask using an armature, and I immediately thought of the Woodland Park Zoo, where visiting the komodo dragons is a must. The scales of a komodo dragon sort of round, so I rolled little clay balls to mimic this texture. I also got the added bonus of leaving my fingerprint on each ball giving the mask an even more reptilian look. I only applied one coat of glaze so that it would be patchy and make the skin look more like a real komodo dragon.
