Koi in clay

April 16, 2022 ASAA

Honorable Mention – Ceramics

Title of Art Piece: Koi in clay
Category: Ceramics – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Malia Iloilo
School: Dimond High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I wanted to inject some symbolism into the design of the vessel, something that summarized my journey in life the last few years, so I picked a series of Koi fish for adornment. The Koi is symbolic throughout history, carrying many meanings including strength and perseverance. Destiny fulfilled is my upstream struggle in completing high school, just as the Koi moves against heavy current to reach its destiny. The color of each Koi represents a historically specific idea that all seem to fit today.
