Title of Art Piece: Identity
Category: Drawing – 2023
Student/Artist’s Name: Natalie Drussell
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: A popular reason that people get tattoos is to represent and show their identities. So in this piece I created a portrait of myself with a tattoo of a bayahibe rose, which is the national flower of the Dominican Republic. Because of my pale features I’ve always been assumed to not be hispanic at all and it’s difficult for people to take that part of me seriously. I also put, “dios, patria, libertad,” as a way to symbolize part of the Dominican Republic’s flag. My identity is something colorful and bright that deserves recognition, like a tattoo on my face.
