Artist Statement: Féileacáin is the Irish word for butterfly. In Irish folklore, the white butterfly is said to represent the soul of the dead, becoming a bridge between the worlds of life and death. With the soft lace and lilac hue, this piece illustrates the otherworldly qualities of this legend. Since my childhood, I have possessed a deep fascination for butterflies and their captivating patterns and colors. Féileacáin captures my admiration for the dynamic shapes found in butterflies. It consists of a white base corset I made, hand-sewn with white lace including some butterfly shaped lace. I covered the chest with stringed beadwork, and patterned and quilted the lilac butterfly wing panels.
