Artist Statement: The Alaskan landscape has raised me. The mountains were something I have always been able to look up to and feel comfort. In the same way, I used to crank my head up to look at my mom, and I would know she was there for me. Even though I’m older and now have to look down to see her, my mom is a rock and inspiration in my life. I recently found a picture of her in an old scientific magazine, and I knew drawing her surrounded by what I was raised around is a gift I could leave when I go to college. On the top border, I left a message that we leave each other before we go on trips, meaning “I love you.” Though leaving for college is more of a goodbye than a quick trip, the piece is a way for me to express my love for this amazing Alaskan woman.
