Title of Art Piece: Contrasting Whale
Category: Sculpture – 2025
Student/Artist’s Name: Ingrid Higdon
School: Juneau Douglas High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Each layer of my sculpture was crafted with intention; the detailed design on its surface was made to reflect that. The contrasting sections were inspired by the duality of the whale, a gentle yet powerful creature. I found the process of creating this whale sculpture to be relaxing, frustrating, and a process requiring a lot of patience. Both the sculpture and my process of creating it felt appropriate considering the many depths of the ocean and how strong, dangerous, and chaotic both the ocean, and the humpback whale are while still being two of the most consistent, peaceful and beautiful things. The sculptures details reflect the multi-faceted creature, its environment, as well as my experiences as an artist.
Artwork Dimensions: 12″ x 8″ x 7″
