Ceramic Vase

April 11, 2013 ASAA

P1020211

(1st Place – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Ceramic Vase
Category: Ceramics
Student/Artist’s Name: Adriana Botelho-Alvarez
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 11th

Artist Statement: I got the inspiration for the glazes from a piece from the Northern Song Period in China. I mixed multiple glazes to give the outside an aged look. I glazed the pot with white underglaze and sgraffito the trees. I then applied wax resist to be able to glaze over the trees and give the clay a darker color. The black inside provides contrast to the beige exterior and is also a metaphor for death as the trees represent life and how death sometimes trickles over onto the other side.
