A Fern Inheritance

Artist Statement: This painting is a portrayal of a scene with my grandma, my mom, and I picking fiddle-head ferns with an abstracted background of foliage and mountains. It symbolizes the generational bequeathal of this tradition of foraging. I used impasto to achieve the lively texture in the plants while using a more traditional painting style to render the figures of the mother and grandmother in order to highlight them. I also used cardboard cutouts protruding from the picture plane to give the impression of mountains framing the scene.
