Adventurous Spirit

Artist Statement: This piece is based on a photo I took while outside my grandmother’s home in Cádiz, in southern Spain. When I visited there, when I met my Spanish family for the first time, when I saw the sights of Spain, I realized that I felt like I belonged there. The people were welcoming, it was warm and lively, and it felt like a new beginning for me, after living almost twenty years of my life in Alaska. I had never seen a palm tree before, and I excitedly took photos of the Spanish wildlife. It was so different, so new, so interesting. This piece represents that feeling of new beginnings and an adventurous spirit. It serves to remind me— and I hope all who see it— that there’s always somewhere new to go, something new to try, something new to see.
