Artist Statement: For this piece, I intended to create an alebrije, a fantastical beast that merges multiple animals together from Mexican folklore. I chose to create a gorilla of sorts that had features of a ram as well. Alebrijes are also known for their unique colors and patterns, which are very bright and stand out. To do this I chose a bright pink for the base color and a pattern of dots that change color as they cross the body. I also chose accent colors that would stand out such as green for the belly and different blues for the horns and nose.To create this piece I formed a large piece of clay into the general shape of the alebrije. I then carved and shaped it to the way I wanted it. Next, I cut it open by the head arms, and horns to hollow out the inside of the piece. Then once it was hollowed, I slipped and scored it all back together. I then cut the head off once more and made it into a lid of sorts, so that the piece can be used as a vessel. Once the piece became bone dry, I used underglazes to add the color to the piece. Then after it was fired, I finished it with a clear glaze on the outside, and I used the glaze coral sands for the inside.
