Artist Statement: Butterflies have always been symbolic to my family, but until recently I never knew what they meant to me. Butterflies are a symbol of death. Not only are their lives fleeting, they shed their skin until they become the most true version of themselves. This piece was inspired by my relationship and interpretation of death. While I don’t necessarily believe in afterlife or rebirth, I do believe that we experience little deaths throughout our life. For example, we lose our childhood self when we grow up. When a loved one dies we lose a part of ourselves, because that person was the only one that could bring out who we were around them. When we grow from past experiences, whether it be trauma, relationships, or general knowledge we lose who we were before them. I believe it is integral that we experience these little deaths, that we experience these changes before we physically die. We don’t know what lies after –if anything at all. Our little deaths are important and we should celebrate them; they are our unique fingerprint of mortality after all.
