The Dream Team

April 19, 2022 ASAA

1st Place – Printmaking

Title of Art Piece: The Dream Team
Category: Printmaking – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Savannah Willis
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

My print shows two draft horses that are harnessed together, getting ready to work. I engraved the design onto a piece of plexiglass, then added ink and rolled it through a printing press to create an intaglio design before adding watercolor. My piece was inspired by my passion for horses; I have ridden horses my entire life and am currently training for competitions this summer. My goals for this work were to emphasize texture, line, and depth as realistically as I could. While making this piece I learned how to control value through pressure and the concentration of mark making. I’m sure that my passions for art and horses will continue to influence each other in the future.

Mount Drum

April 18, 2022 ASAA

2nd Place – Printmaking

Title of Art Piece: Mount Drum
Category: Printmaking – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Grayson Conti
School: West Anchorage
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My piece is a six color reduction print that has five layers of carving. I drew inspiration from a photograph that I made in 2020 of Mount Drum from the Glenn Highway. I created this piece by first carving away the pieces that I wanted to stay white, such as the clouds and the snow. Then I printed the yellow and blue layer by inking half of my block with yellow, and half with light blue. Then I carved away the pieces that I wanted to stay yellow or blue. I repeated this process all the way to the darkest color – a green so dark that it is almost black. I made this piece in order to become more comfortable around reduction printing. Reduction printing used to make me anxious because there is no going back once you have carved a color away and once you have started carving, you cannot ever pull that print again. I really enjoyed making this piece and I think that it eased a lot of my worries over having no chances to re-do the prints. I also kept imagining that I was painting and that helped. I am very happy with how my piece turned out. I think that the colors work well together and my registration was very accurate. I also think that the light green showing through the gray road creates an interesting sense of texture that I like.

This is a print done in on sticky back foam and printed with Akua printing inks. The grainy texture is a result of the foam plate. After researching octopi I was able to draw this little guy.

Honorabe Mention – Printmaking

Title of Art Piece: Day on the Lake
Category: Printmaking – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Emily Erickson
School: Dimond High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I wanted to celebrate the Alaska summers. In this case a day on the lake helps wash away the cold dark winters. I enjoy the long days of summer and every minute of sunshine usually running, hiking, and paddling until the sun goes down. I can share my prints with friends and family.

Student/Artist’s Name: Paige Baggen

Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

Hand Print (Printmaking)

For this print, I wanted to create a visually appealing image that I could use to represent my mark as an artist. Although I love to experiment with various tools, programs, and media, my most valuable assets will always be my hands. I have printed this on sketchbooks, cards, and journals.

Bad Bunny

April 6, 2022 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Bad Bunny
Category: Printmaking – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Natalie Carreon
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My art shows one of my favorite music artists in a variety of colors and was a re-creation of a previous print I made using styrofoam. I carved the design into cereal box cardboard, then inked the plate and ran it through the press to create an intaglio print. Overall I wanted the piece to be more colorful and detailed than the original, and so added watercolor after printing. Throughout high school I have taken multiple art classes and I hope to continue to make art on my own after graduating.
