Triptych

April 19, 2022 ASAA

1st Place – Painting

Title of Art Piece: Triptych
Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Mariah McGuire
School: Homer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This was my first time doing an art series and paintings this big. The main goal of these was to show different stages I go through in my mentality: of being numb and wanting to wrap myself in my bed, of seeing some prospective goodness to pull me out of my dark and numb moments, and reaching the outer parts of the cave in the light, finally blessed with a moment of elation.

From stage 1 to 3, the artworks gradually increase in color. The less color, the more senseless the paintings’ subject was feeling. The yellow dress was the only color constant, symbolizing a stereotypical color of happiness, plastered onto the subject just like an outsider’s perspective. To others, the subject may seem happy, because that is the mask—the dress—that they are wearing. But the monochrome world of stage 1 is how the subject sees everything.

For stage 2 I kept with a cooler color palette to show that there still isn’t a lot of warmth that the subject is feeling inside, but the light brown rocky opening to the cave is the subject seeing that warmth is attainable. The water symbolizes that this is an opportunity for change, with an ebb and flow that water provides, but at the moment it is semi-stagnant with just some wind from the opening rustling it. The starry cave lining could be glistening rocks, but I was imagining that this stage of mentality seems like it can last forever and is ever-expansive with overthinking, similar to space.

Stage 3 completes the series with a burst of saturation. The subject has finally reached the high of the mental space, beaming with joy. The blue sky symbolizes freedom and an open space, and the pink petals symbolize growth and the warmth and beauty the subject can now see in the world. If you look closely, you may also notice that the subject’s hair grows throughout the series, which stems from Native American culture where hair is an integral part of the soul. To deal with grief and loss, the hair is cut, and as it grows back to its full length it shows the healing process that one has been through to move past the hardships. Now, these stages are not the end of a journey. I believe that the cycle continues all throughout life, with each stage lasting a different amount of time each go-around. The world may seem dull, but have hope and most importantly willingness to see a light outside the cave.

1776

2nd Place – Painting

Title of Art Piece: 1776
Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Garrett Klein
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

“1776” was a piece I did inspired by old fashioned pieces done during the 1700s, taking into consideration the light reflection upon the skin and use of soft colors I regularly paint adults or teenagers. With this piece, I had to rethink my approach of the child’s face. Unlike adults and teens, childrens faces are softer, and have less sharp features. I had to keep that in mind while working on the shadows, as to not make them too dramatic.

While working on the dress, I mindfully approached the shadows cast by the wrinkles which contrasts the sharper light along the edges.

Once – semi dry – I applied a thin layer of Acrylic Medium MATTE finish, causing the areas of undried oil to thin. This gives the piece an aged look.

Throughout the last two years of my life, it seemed like I had been stuck in the same room day after day. With limited things to do, and the looming thought of the world collapsing outside my room, my walls slowly began to fill up with an endless stream of artwork. Soon enough my room became a piece of art. With this painting, I wanted to capture a space that Is important to me, and that I have made my own.

Honorable Mention – Painting

Title of Art Piece: The Lost City
Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Willa Pruner
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

The idea for this painting came to me while I was driving to skating practice and it came to me so suddenly that I had to pull over and scribbled it on the back of an envelope so I wouldn’t forget. I have always found the idea of nature prevailing after disaster very interesting, so I decided to portray a world where humanity no longer exists and therefore all the plant life has grown over the city. In the painting you can see where plants have grown up out of the road and sidewalks and taken over the sides of the buildings. Some of where there used to be lines in the road are also visible, but it is mostly grown over with grass and other plant life. This is one of my favorite works of art that I’ve ever created. It came out exactly how I pictured it in my mind, and I couldn’t be more happy with it. My personal favorite part of the painting is the finishing touch of the birds in the sky. Originally I hadn’t planned to do that, however when I had finished the painting, I noticed that it was missing something and with a split second decision I added the birds, bringing the painting together.

Title of Art Piece: Mushrooms
Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Emma Kinmon
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

In my artwork “Mushrooms” I painted a type of turkey tail mushroom growing on a tree. I chose a vibrant dark shade of blue based on the variety of turkey tail and to show contrast between that on the bark. I wanted to experiment a lot with the textures of the wood, to add more interest I used a variety of shades of brown. I knew from the beginning I wanted the mushrooms to break the border to make it feel a little more whimsical. My artwork is on mixed media paper done with watercolor, fine liners, and colored pencils. I’ve always been inspired by nature and fascinated by mushrooms especially based on the variety of types. They play an important part in our ecosystem so I made them the focus of the work.

Title of Art Piece: Complete
Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Arianna Espindola
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

I began this painting with the intention to capture a personal journey that lasted several months. Throughout that time, I suffered numerous battles in my personal life. I underwent the darkness of depression, an injury during a sports season, and the end of my first relationship. As a result, I felt as if I was not myself anymore. I lost the aspects of myself that make me who I am. Despite all of these setbacks, I persevered and eventually found myself again. This piece is about breaking free from the darkness in life and slowly piecing myself back together. The birds represent all of those qualities of myself finally reuniting in a colorful, complete collage. It expresses freedom and confidence in who I am and how I want to live. This painting depicts a personal journey that I will never forget.

This painting is done on a foam poster board with acrylic paints. 9 hands are featured. I sketched out the composition while at work and then spent many evening hours working on this project as an extra project for class.
We are all tied to time. We have it, we lose it, we watch it, we want more of it. Time rules my life with school, class schedules, work and at home. The oval shape represents the shape of a mirror, some of the hands were studies of my own hands. So this is a reflection of my relationship with time.

Personally, I have been striving to become better at using the watercolor medium. In this piece I believe I have achieved that higher understanding of how this medium works. I have done a lot of watercolors in the past yet this piece is my favorite. I believe it portrays how much I’ve grown as an artist. With this piece I wanted to try something new composition wise, so instead of using color on the entire piece I wanted to tell a story with this picture. With the red square being at the top I tried to represent life, color and warmth; with the blue square being at the bottom I was hoping to portray the feeling of death and being deep underground.

This painting was actually a present for my mom. I wanted to paint something that would remind her of her four daughters, so when I saw the little cat peeking out of the planter box I thought it was perfectly goofy enough to paint. I don’t have much experience painting animals, but practice makes perfect! I had a lot of fun creating little creatures inspired by my sisters and creating something simplistic but pleasant. This painting was also done using watercolor and ink.

For this piece, I got my inspiration from the images of classic ballerinas. The idea was that they would all look very similar but still have differing traits to illustrate that while a group of dancers should move as one, their individual aura should also be portrayed. I also wanted to show the more raw side of ballet, which is why I wanted to paint the backstage before the show begins. My main media’s for this painting were watercolor paints and ink. I’d say my main struggle with this was the amount of people in one painting, but seeing as I’m trying to improve at portraiture, I’m glad I went for it.

“Old Knight” pulls inspiration from some of my other pieces, and adds varying age to my portraits. While working on Old Knight, my focus was upon the realism of warm shadow, and the natural folds added to older skin. Furthermore, when I start portraits I usually start with the eyes. That being said, while working on Old Knight, I started with the nose, allowing for a different take while building the light on the bridge of the nose and further up the face.

While working on the beard and hair, I focused on the flow and directional aspects that the light naturally added to the already intense features.

While working on this study piece, my focus was upon the shadow cast by the turban, and the warm reflection of the skin. Once dry, I used a glazing technique over the blue, making a deeper aqua color. Once the piece was fully dry, I applied a small area of gold leaf near the ear, creating an earring shape. The blue and gold casting a strong, and elegant, pull of focus.

To me, this piece represents the power and harmony of patience and elegance. The outcome of a long story, finally falling off the shoulders of the young. The simple gesture of seeming calm, almost like a deep breath – and an exhale. Feeling the weight leave your shoulders, and the comfort of peace and warmth fill that void. This is the relatable feeling of Blue.

My watercolor piece shows abstract faces in a cool color scheme. I focused on using rhythm with variation in sizes and shapes and also brought in some aspects of the negative space watercolor technique by adding dark values between the faces. The theme of this piece was the multiple sides there are to a person and how those come out depending on what social situation they find themselves in. I chose it because it’s something I think about a lot and I wanted to express how I felt about it through art. Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Jusse'll Watkins-Robertson
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

My piece shows a warm background with a dragon on top. It was created using tempera paints. I started by picking a non-objective background, then chose the dragon as a subject because it went well with the background. The dragon represents my anger. When I’m angry, I tend to typically explode, which I know is a bad thing and I’m trying to improve. My art helps me express myself when I feel like I can’t do a good job expressing my emotions, and it’s something that I’ve loved ever since I was younger. I am hoping to take painting again next year to grow my knowledge of different types of painting and would like to potentially go to art school in the future.

Apples Roast too Close to the Sun

April 6, 2022 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Apples Roast too Close to the Sun
Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Amelia White
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

We were exploring surrealism in the painting medium and this was my take on it. I chose objects that I enjoy drawing or have a greater meaning to me. For example, apples will always remind me of my eating disorder. The two figures have their eyes shut and the one on the right is drooling. This ties in metaphors of depression. Overall I wanted to express the randomness, yet deeper meanings that surrealism can represent.

Abduction

April 6, 2022 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Abduction
Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Alain Soltys-Gray
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

Camping on the Alaskan shores and listening to alien abduction stories initially sparked my inspiration for this painting. I was not initially going to frame it around an alien abduction theme, but I felt like the painting flowed better with this narrative. Of course, all the fish look shocked to find strange “aliens” approaching them. I used perspective to transition the viewpoint from the salmon to the fisherman to guide the viewers to the conclusion that this painting is from the salmon’s point of view. Routine fishing trip or alien abduction? Everyone sees life through a different perspective.

Fresh Snow on Black Bear Chairlift

April 6, 2022 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Fresh Snow on Black Bear Chairlift
Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Alain Soltys-Gray
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I was inspired to paint this painting when I was up skiing one afternoon with a friend. I wanted to highlight the anticipation of getting off the chairlift through my use of dramatic lighting and motion throughout the piece. The use of the light from the sun first attracts the attention of the eye of the viewer, then depth and atmospheric perspective are used to further move the eye along the piece until the viewer’s eyes would land at the place where the skiers would get off the chairlift. Overall, this painting represents the harmony of people in nature. Because of skiing and the changing climate with variable snow years, this causes more awareness in keeping the environment pristine.

Universe of Soul

Title of Art Piece: Universe of Soul
Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Hayley Limpinsel
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

When one person can make a thousand artworks from aspects of who they are, it’s difficult to pinpoint what part of me I wanted to express when asked to paint my character. I created this piece as a reflection of the more serene parts of my character. To me, serenity has always been found in the natural world. I chose to experiment with more stylized coloring and tried to blend the realism I usually use with the colors and emotions I felt, with an acrylic medium as an added challenge.

Mystery of the Blue Lady

April 6, 2022 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Mystery of the Blue Lady
Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Violet Bernoski
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

Somewhere in my mundane life there is a world full of mystery awaiting me, that is what my art is for and what this watercolor painting portrays. This watercolor painting illustrates a dark forest full of shadows and greenery that hides a blue and almost ghostlike girl sitting on a tree stump with a wistful presence. This girl leaves you wondering and wanting more. Wondering why she is hiding in this enchanted forest, wondering, “What she is? Is she a fairy? Nymph? Or maybe a goddess?” She hides behind a cloak of mystery which leaves you wanting more. To create this whimsical mystery I used watercolor techniques to help with the fairytale presence. I used negative space to make the girl have a certain glow and to really make sure she was the focal point. My goals as an artist are to create things that inspire me and to tell people who I am. This painting helped me think more outside of the box and understand what I want to see from my art and myself in the future. I want to create pieces with mystical subject matters that are very different from reality. Painting gives me the opportunity to be a storyteller.

I created this piece to illustrate the life and dwindling ice that animals face throughout the years. I wanted to make it playful while subsequently drawing attention of the viewer further out to the ice that is drifting of into the sea which is supposed to leave a lasting impression that global warming is destroying environments that our friendly furry pals need to survive.

Title of Art Piece: Beyond the Foliage
Category: Painting – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Cody Carroll
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This piece of acrylic art is supposed to represent the shy fragile nature of peeking into something private. The duck in it’s nature it the center piece to the cacophony of noise that is the foliage around it. You’ve snuck a peak into something that nobody is suppose to see, an animal in it’s natural habitat moving into view as you make eye contact. It is a special moment meant to be shared in silence, a split second before the fright of it’s vulnerability sends it into flight.

Student/Artist’s Name: Alain Soltys-Gray

This is my 4th and final submission to the National Jr. Duck Stamp Competition. This is a very intense competition that calls for scientific accuracy to the water fowl, and the environment. Details are very important. I typically paint landscapes either from images, memory or plein air. Adding these Long Tailed ducks was a challenge and achieving a well balanced composition was rewarding.

I painted this during COVID. The storm keeping me inside isolated from my friends and hobbies may be blowing snow or COVID. This dark emotional painting allowed me to express my frustration in being bottled up during the mitigation measures. It was therapy for me to use angry strokes and create a dark mood in the composition.
