Pirate Patch Games

April 19, 2022 ASAA

1st Place – Ceramics & Best of Show

Title of Art Piece: Pirate Patch Games
Category: Ceramics – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Jamisen Rasmussen
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

When I was twelve years old, I was in an accident which caused the loss of sight in my left eye. My recovery took countless months due to various other injuries. Although dealing with seven broken bones and a major concussion was difficult, my sight loss challenged me the most.

After a couple weeks being home from the hospital, I realized I was able to see a tiny bit out of my blind eye. I was exhilarated; even though everything was dark and severely unfocused, there was hope. I decided to revisit my doctor who referred me to a neuro-ophthalmologist. At neuro-ophthalmology appointments, I participated in a few tests and therapy “games” to strengthen the little sight in my eye. My extended family jumped on the exciting possibility of gaining my sight back, and I joined them. I worked and worked at therapy, which was not only physically tiring, but it constantly reminded me of what I had been through. Instead of focusing on medical truth, I had convinced myself that if I kept working hard, I had a shot at my eye fully recovering.

I worked for almost a year at the taxing therapy exercises, which my family called the “Pirate Patch Games,” but my eye didn’t improve. I finally sat down with my doctor who explained that although I may be helping my eyes track together, my eye will never heal. I was devastated. I was mad at my family for giving me false hope, and I was even more mad at myself for believing them. I kept trying to work at therapy, but every time I practiced, I felt like screaming, and I eventually quit altogether.

This year in art, I have focused on sharing my unique experience with vision loss through ceramics. This specific piece was about eye therapy. One of my frequent exercises involved little plastic geometric shapes. Someone would arrange a set of shapes, and I had to arrange another set of shapes to look identical to theirs using the limited sight in my blind eye. I usually had to sit with my face an inch away from the table, and it was always a long and aggravating process. For this piece, I wanted to make a pot that not only represented the therapy I practiced, but the emotions I felt during said practices. On one half, the shapes are uniform and smooth, while on the other half, they are missing or falling off. This contrast represents the simplistic normalcy of sight that my left eye will never have again.

Full Steam Ahead

April 18, 2022 ASAA

2nd Place – Ceramics

Title of Art Piece: Full Steam Ahead
Category: Ceramics – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Quinn Cox
School: Soldotna High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

“Full Steam Ahead” is a mix of sprig molds, hand building, and slab building. My inspiration came from other students’ projects. Many were making large vessels and I liked the shapes. For the theme I was inspired by video games, especially Minecraft, because with the addition of copper blocks, many people have been making steampunk themes. After I had the idea I looked on Pinterest and found more and more pictures of details I could add onto my project. The hardest part was trying to keep everything wet enough to work with. Since my vase has a lot of details, it took time to build and then attach each one. The glasses took the most time to make. It took me about a day to get the shape right and mirror it.

Dinner For Two

3rd Place – Ceramics

Title of Art Piece: Dinner For Two
Category: Ceramics – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Kaia Lass
School: Sitka High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

“Art has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. Growing up as the daughter of an art teacher gave me many obstacles and benefits. Some obstacles included being so frustrated at the wheel freshman year when I couldn’t center a pound clay to save my life, to restarting a piece numerous times because it didn’t fit my needs. Why I call those obstacles is because my father would always push me to finish and become the best artist I could. Some benefits include being able to work on my skills after hours and getting the real help and tools when I needed it.
My main drive for art has always been my dad. Growing up seeing his beautiful artwork such as paintings, drawings, ceramics, etc. has pushed me to create my own. I’ve also witnessed his criticism of his own work from a young age which pushed me to critique my own work and make it the best it could be. A lot of the work I produce is influenced by the ocean and the colors that catch my eye. I was raised in Southeast and spent a lot of time on the ocean and camped frequently, so that has helped inspire my work.

The pieces of artwork displayed are all wheel thrown and the dinner plates are —11.5“. The glaze technique used for the plates consists of poring two colors onto the piece then using a circular motion to move the glaze around in numerous areas to create the beautiful effect.”

Teapot in Breaking Green

April 17, 2022 ASAA

3rd Place – Ceramics

Title of Art Piece: Teapot in Breaking Green
Category: Ceramics – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Teslin Thomas
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This simple yet elegant blue teapot was inspired by my love of tea and the bright blue ocean
waters of Prince William Sound. I began the process of creating it when inspired by how powerful and
dynamic water and waves can be. The symmetrical wheel-thrown pottery form and simple ergonomic
handles contrasts the chaos of the mottled bluish hue exterior. The blue glazes remind me of the color that
Alaskan ocean water has when the sun refracts off the surface. The large handle makes for functional
design as well as easy leverage for pouring. I took care to attach the spout at a height where the teapot
could be filled completely and not spill when set down. This was my first attempt throwing a concave and
rounded form on the wheel. I learned new techniques to create negative space that allowed me to maintain
structure while stretching the clay to its limit.

Koi in clay

Honorable Mention – Ceramics

Title of Art Piece: Koi in clay
Category: Ceramics – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Malia Iloilo
School: Dimond High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I wanted to inject some symbolism into the design of the vessel, something that summarized my journey in life the last few years, so I picked a series of Koi fish for adornment. The Koi is symbolic throughout history, carrying many meanings including strength and perseverance. Destiny fulfilled is my upstream struggle in completing high school, just as the Koi moves against heavy current to reach its destiny. The color of each Koi represents a historically specific idea that all seem to fit today.

Title of Art Piece: Evolving Beauty
Category: Ceramics – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Kaylana Nations
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I wanted to create a piece that I could flow with and not worry about if the form was smooth or bumpy. I allowed the clay to shift and move with an organic feel. It was important for me not to have any precise lines and to allow the glaze to fall and splatter. The shape alludes to human form and the imperfections add to this form.

Flagon with a Dragon

April 6, 2022 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Flagon with a Dragon
Category: Ceramics – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Trenton Boots
School: Soldotna High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My Flagon with a Dragon is inspired by a scene in the 1955 film The Court Jester. It is a scene in which two characters go back and forth in a tongue twister trying to tell which vessel the poison is in. One of which is the Flagon with a Dragon, however I took some creative liberties changing the metal flagon to a wooden stein and adding my own twist to the dragon. After glazing the dragon bones I then wiped off the glaze to create a rough bone like texture to help tell the story of the flagon. This flagon is of the King’s personal collection, the skeleton belongs to the offspring of the dragon he slayed to remind his people of his power.

The inspiration behind my piece is my grandmother’s house. My grandmother was a major part of my childhood. I always remember her having these fiery tulips in her house every spring. I represented this with the orange and bright yellow tulips on the teapot. Through creating this piece, I learned a lot about patience- painting every little detail with as much precision as possible. I love this piece and how it turned out. I hope that “Rhonda” inspires others to not be afraid of putting in the time to create something beautiful.

Title of Art Piece: Goblet
Category: Ceramics – 2022
Student/Artist’s Name: Marin Hart
School: Haines High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I have always loved working with clay. It is so freeing and easy to maneuver. Whenever I get the chance to use it, I try making pieces that can be gifts for my loved ones or useful for my own needs. For this piece, I wanted to create a goblet for my father to match a drinking glass my mother has had for years. Although I used her cup for inspiration, this goblet really came to life entirely in my own eyes. I used a combination of the coil technique for the decorative handle and the slab technique for base and cup itself. After it was fired I dipped its base in a mat glaze and its top in two different blue mid-range gloss glazes.
