Artist Statement: For “18/81,” I aimed to capture a sense of nostalgia. The goal of this piece was to evoke emotions tied to the passage of time and the experience of growing older. While each of us is unique, we all share the universal experience of leaving parts of the past behind. Whether it’s a happy childhood memory or the loss of someone close, looking back and allowing ourselves to truly feel is what makes us all human together. In order to really evoke these feelings I used bright, pastel colors which ties in a bit of what my childhood looked like. On the birthday cake I did a sort of inversion on the candle “81”. By looking at it from your perspective it looks like “18” which represents her reminiscing about her youth.
