Toasting Marshmallows

April 5, 2017 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Drawing)

Title of Art Piece: Toasting Marshmallows
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Emily Manthey
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I use colored pencils in this piece to study, in depth, value and texture changes. My subject matter is something our family enjoys doing, roasting marshmallows inside together. The marshmallow and the flame create a very strong focal point through using a very detailed texture study. The repetition in the flames helps the eye travel to my focal point.

Title of Art Piece: Teapot Set
Category: Ceramics – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Madison Ressler
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

This was my first time making a teapot set. I wanted to contrast the angles of the teapot with the smooth curves of the cups. The angles and clean lines of the saucers echo the design of the teapot.

Sharpies

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Sharpies
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Keith Perry
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This is a colored pencil study of my Sharpies. I used colored pencil to show a realistic gradation of value. My hope was to give a sense of depth in the picture through high contrast created by the shadows. Overlapping and foreshortening help create the shallow sense of depth.

Title of Art Piece: Bike Study
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Keith Perry
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This is a technical drawing of a bike. I used foreshortening to create a sense of depth in the picture. My media is graphite, and my goal was to realistically portray the many different textures on the old bike. I believe I was successful in showing the reflections, rubber, and rust.

Field of Flowers

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Field of Flowers
Category: Mixed Media – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Emily Manthey
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This is a landscape painting of a photo I took last summer. I used the detail of the rocks to help create a sense of perspective and depth. The light is exaggerated which leads our eye back to the details of the painting. I used silk flowers for the fireweed and I believe this helps create a strong focal point.

Title of Art Piece: Figure
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Kiley Nagl
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

This was simply a figure study. I used foreshortening to create visual interest. I used contrasting colors hoping to create more of an emotive feel for the viewer. The brushstrokes were left loose to create a surface texture on the figure.

Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Emily Manthey
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This piece is a graphite study of hand washing dishes. I used high contrast in my value tones to create a strong focal point. The repetition of pattern and texture from the dish and soap bubbles successfully gave the drawing an overall rhythm and unity that I was very happy with.

Title of Art Piece: Strawberries
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Emily Manthey
School: Wasilla High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This drawing was a colored pencil study of light, and texture. I used a very familiar subject matter of moist strawberries to focus on repetition of pattern in the seeds. The highlights and shadows give us a strong visual sense of the fresh water on the berries. Using black paper gave the colors a depth that I was very happy with.
