Holding on to the Galaxy

April 3, 2017 ASAA

(3rd Place – Painting)

Title of Art Piece: Holding on to the Galaxy
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Mercedez Caudillo
School: Unalaska City School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

I was inspired to do this piece because I wanted to try and use a different medium for art other than just regular pencil. I have been interested in galaxy artwork and I wanted to try it out for myself. Another thing that I had never tried was doing a self-portrait or painting any animals. Overall, I feel good about the end result.

Elizabeth Peratrovich

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Elizabeth Peratrovich
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Desiree Lynch
School: Unalaska City School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This was the very first portrait I ever painted in my life. I was honored to have been able to paint Elizabeth Peratrovich, someone I very much look up to. Through her determination and belief that good would prevail, she changed society in Alaska; the very first anti-discrimination bill was written and lobbied by her. This is impressive, because in the 1940’s, as a woman, and not just a woman but a native woman, she achieved this. I, and so many others, look up to her as a civil rights leader. I personally credit her as my favorite activist.

Systems

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Systems
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Samuel Unger
School: Unalaska City School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I intended for this piece to be a statement on the music industry, how one band or artist is just one cog in the system. Part of the message is that the music industry sees the artists it employs as black and white, you either make us money, or you don’t work for us at all. Doing this piece in graphite was a challenge for me as it was the largest graphite piece I’ve drawn to date.

Inside Coming Out

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Inside Coming Out
Category: Mixed Media – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Halle Savage
School: Unalaska City School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

This piece was intended to tell people that who you are on the outside does not reflect who you are on the inside–no matter what you look like or who you love. The judgement of others should not change who you are or give you a false representation of what you should be.
