The Dead Line

April 1, 2018 ASAA

(1st Place – Drawing)

Title of Art Piece: The Dead Line
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Michael Julson
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This piece embodies the strain that I put on myself while working on a piece for any reason other than my own. Mostly connected to the piece itself, this feeling arises whenever i work on anything. However in this case it was much more intense because it was on such short notice. I just zoned out for a sec, woops.

Eyes Chatter

April 1, 2018 ASAA

(1st Place – Mixed Media)

Title of Art Piece: Eyes Chatter
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Lake Siner
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I never actually plan my pieces. I let the clay tell me what to do. Most pieces end up with patterns of alternating chatter marks and dots. As my middle name is Argus, I realized that I am adding the mythical of my namesake into my pieces. I also have discovered the Great Argus Pheasant and how this bird creates its feather patterns with the same “eyes”. This “Argus Eyes” vase and the Great Argus Pheasant feathers are a perfect pair. This piece is a perfect compliment of each other and who we are.

Memory Project

(1st Place – Painting)
CONGRESSIONAL AWARD

Title of Art Piece: Memory Project
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Amber Rounds-McPherson
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

In this piece (both portraits), I lovingly mixed oil based paints on a thin unstretch canvas, using my arsenal of brushes and fingertips. This portrait was created as a donation to “The Memory Project,” a nonprofit organization that invites young artists to create portraits of children around the world. The subjects of the portraits have faced the unbelievable horrors of violence, disasters, extreme poverty, and neglect. To paint anyone face is an intimate and personal undertaking, hopefully this sharing of art will help the children to feel valued and important, and to know that people around the globe truly care about their wellbeing.

A Ring of Endless Light

April 5, 2018 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Painting)

Title of Art Piece: A Ring of Endless Light
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Veronica Salter
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I like to examine a variety of ideas and media while I’m creating something new. Consequently, the concepts I explore while in this process often influence the direction of my creative process. To be frank, the title of my piece was taken in part from my favorite childhood book by Madeleine L’Engle, “A Ring of Endless Light”, a novel that explores the role love and poetry in coming to terms with grief. While I haven’t read “A Ring of Endless Light” in years, I wanted my title to not only reflect my visuals, but the collective influence of media on my art as well. The music, conversations, books, environment, and art that I am exposed to daily influence the art styles and designs that I find attractive and interesting. For example, I’ve read quite a few fantasy and science fiction books in recent years, and the value of discovery and curiosity in these stories has stayed with me. Because of this, in this particular piece –featuring a starry background, gold accents, and a crystal ball–, I wanted to emulate the feeling of being drawn to the mysterious and unknown which in this painting is the creation of myself—complete yet not.

Eclipse

April 5, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Eclipse
Category: Ceramics – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Lake Siner
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This was my first time exploring the raku firing technique. All I can say is it was exhilarating! The entire process involved every sense: there was the sound of the cracking glazes and bubbling water, the heat of the fire, the strong smell of the burning ash, the wind, the sight of the glowing pieces. At one time I threw more saw dust unto my piece and the ash that was suspended all around my face caught on fire.–I was not scared but I certainly felt the heat and saw nothing but flame engulfing me for a split second. The eclipse of the entire process was to see my first and only raku piece which far exceeded my expectations. Raku is a life of its own.

Six Sided Flower Box

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Six Sided Flower Box
Category: Ceramics – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Willa Madden-Wood
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I drew inspiration for a hexagonal box from other square and rectangle boxes, but I wanted to spice it up a bit. The box itself was built out of slabs using a protractor and ruler to measure all of the pieces of the box. The hexagonal shape of the box gave way to the design of the flower on the lid, and placement of the petals. The flower and colors of the box were inspired by the water lily, which grow from the dark bottom of a pond then are beautiful when they reach the surface. Green on the lid to represent a lily pad floating on the water, the light blue outside, and the flower sits on top of the pad. The inside is dark blue to be the deep, dark water underneath the surface from which the flower grows.

Happy Otter

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Happy Otter
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Cameron Okins
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This photo was created in illustrator using a polyart technique, using darker colors to represent depth. I originally made this photo with the intention of creating a piece that represented Alaska and it’s culture. The diversity of wildlife and the open ocean is what Alaska is known for, making the otter an excellent representation of this.

Lucid Movement

Title of Art Piece: Lucid Movement
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Michael Julson
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I have been working on the human form and this pose shows such dynamic movements that I was inspired to add the bright colors. This was a challenge for me in that I was not using shading techniques of a graphite pencil, rather I started the piece with a black brush pen then added the translucent water colors.

Lacrimosa

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Lacrimosa
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Tianah Sangster
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This painting is a portrait of myself and my fish, Mozart, who passed away two years ago. I titled this piece Lacrimosa which means “tearful” in Latin. Lacrimosa is part of Requiem Mass, the last piece by the composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who wrote it before dying in 1791. The song reveals the mankind’s deepest emotions and fear of death. In this painting, I imagined him swimming along to the song.

On Ice

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: On Ice
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Audrey Schick
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I originally chose several photos of different ducks including the wood duck and mandarin. The canvasback seemed the most beautiful to me. The whole painting started off with a dusky medium tone blue to set the scene, with accents of darker blues to add depth to the background. As depth was being added, white for the snow and ice was added in. I tried to keep the background detailed without being too eye catching. For the watery sand the duck stands on, it was a struggle to get just the right blue! After a while of mixing various amounts of blue with grey and orange, I added green to see what would happen. Just a touch of it was enough. Still took several times to get the right look, however. The back of the duck, where the black meets the white was my favorite part of the painting. The brush gave just the right texture to allow the two shades to meet without being too perfect. In most paintings, it’s important to make the head of your subject your main attraction. While the whole bird is beautiful, it’s head needed the extra umph. The reference I used was perfect because of the blues surrounding the deep, contrasting orange; the slopes in the snow lead you right to it.

Student/Artist’s Name: Benedick Benin
School: Thunder Mountain High School

I wanted to push myself with value in painting and this subject was the perfect choice with the use of a light source that is from the bottom illuminating only a part of the face and boat. This adds to the mystery. I also painted this as a gift to one of my teachers.

Title of Art Piece: Lilac Light
Category: Photography – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Annika Pearson
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This photograph of my sister was an experiment in light and exposure. I had her twirl a string of fairy lights in a dark room while I set up my camera to shoot with an exposure of 1-3 seconds. The resulting photo features streaks of light illuminating the image. Due to the simplicity of this image, it has proved to be an excellent starting point for further experimentation with color effects in Photoshop.

I took this picture at the National Jamboree 2017. A Boy Scout national camp site where scouts around the Nation came together and did activities and loads of things together. There was about 40,000 scouts there and President Trump spoke at the event. I took this picture during a sunset at my camp site. During my digital arts class we worked on photography, and I had a project to make panorama pictures into planets. I really like how mine turned out so I’m entering mine.
