Weathered Worlds

April 1, 2017 ASAA

(1st Place – Ceramics)
Best of Show Winner

Title of Art Piece: Weathered Worlds
Category: Ceramics – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Lake Siner
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I am obsessed with perfection. I began making lids one year ago and have been striving for the perfect fit. With these piece I have achieved my goal. To make the fit even better, after the glaze firing I used silica carbide and almond oil to polish the area where the lid and base meet. The fit is tight and smooth on all three pieces. A while back I was using an agate stone to polish greenware and discovered chattering. I have used this technique with various chattering tools in most of my pieces. For the glaze, I wanted to emphasize the alternating chattering and dots and this matt glaze gave the results I was wanting. It also gives a weathered look which fits the entire set.

Artwork Dimensions: 10" tall X 4.5" wide (for tallest piece)

The Flowers Inside

April 1, 2017 ASAA

(1st Place – Photography)

Title of Art Piece: The Flowers Inside
Category: Photography – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Spencer Stratton
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I was learning how to do double exposure in photoshop. I combined three photographs, two of them I had taken of some of the flowers at Glacier Gardens in Juneau. I really like flowers, and believe they tend to make everything just a little bit more beautiful, so I figured I might as well try it on myself. After tons of opacity changes, masking work, and editing the background to have the right colors, I finally got to a result that I was happy with.

(2nd Place – Graphic Design)

Title of Art Piece: TMHS Falcons
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Sonny Mauricio
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This is the 2016 – 2017 yearbook cover for TMHS. This is also my third and final cover that I will have created for TMHS. Our theme this year is “Space” so I was challenged to design a creative cover that fit our theme. The design was created using programs Photoshop and Cinema 4D. Please, note, this is NOT a photograph. This is an original piece created by me from scratch. Along with the creation of the cover, I screen recorded the entire design process. You can watch the speed art by scanning the cover with the Aurasma app and following the “2017 TMHS Yearbook” channel. The total recording time was eight hours. I had to render the speed art three times in order to compress the video down to two minutes. I thought it would be interesting to have the students and staff watch the creation of my final yearbook cover for Thunder Mountain High School.

Title of Art Piece: Guardians of Life
Category: Multicultural Art – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: elizabeth staveland
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I was trying to create a Tlingit design, because I am Tlingit myself. But in the process of making the “Guardians of Life”, it mutated into something different, as my imagination went wild. It’s a wolf and two foxes in the background symbolizing loyalty and friendship. I hope you will like my design. I created it using Adobe Illustrator, all from scratch.

The Grey Ghost (CV-6) USS Enterprise

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: The Grey Ghost (CV-6) USS Enterprise
Category: Ceramics – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Jessie Lamson
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I got the idea to create a large dragon sculpture after a drawing I made that looked like it would fit well in a garden, perhaps in the middle of a pond. I’d been intending to draw an aircraft carrier, but got distracted partway through, and ended up with a dragon. How that happened I doubt I’ll ever know. I decided just out of curiosity to try and design an aircraft carrier as a dragon. I then used that design to create a statue of the design I was fond of. I wanted to push my limits and finish off my high-school art with a bang, or in this case a roar. I used everything I knew about clay to ensure the project would come out of the kiln in one piece. It took three people to load Grey Ghost in the kiln and to retrieve him.

Sweet Fangs

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Sweet Fangs
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Jessie Lamson
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I created these dragon’s while I was at a bakery. I got inspired by the cupcake I was eating to try and capture the feeling, so I began to doodle the cupcake, right on top five an older drawing of a small plain dragon. That gave me the idea to begin drawing the dragons as food, desserts specifically because the bright color and pretty decorations made for simple, recognisable designs.
Basically in short, I was hungry.

Thoughts of Yellow

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Thoughts of Yellow
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Madison Gilberto
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

All my life I have been fascinated by the human face and form. I’ve practiced in many mediums trying to capture a person’s essence and this has honestly been one of my favorite processes. I used prisma-color on illustration board. The piece took weeks of obsessive detail work. I’ve discovered a lot about a medium I had rarely used before and enjoyed myself immensely. For a lot of the highlighting and texture I used an x-acto knife to cut into the board and fray the paper, the process for which was extremely frustrating and ultimately rewarding. I get my passion for art and people from my great grandma who gave me the base for all I know.

I created this piece in mind thinking of a way a human lives. We are surrounded by four elements we take in naturally on this Earth. Being brought into this world knowing nothing, yet everything always turns out right amongst the confusion and unknown. We continue this life in different directions but find ourselves learning something new everyday.

Title of Art Piece: Winnie the Pooh Honey Jar
Category: Ceramics – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Riley Olsen
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My name is Riley Olsen and I go to Thunder Mountain High School. This is my second year in ceramics and it is by far my favorite class. I enjoy it because it is so relaxing and fun. I could be having a terrible day but once I come to ceramics class it brightens my day. Once I start working on it piece it lets me relax forget about everything else that has been going on. That is why I love doing it so much.
I made this piece because I like making tall vases. I enjoy it because it is unique compared to all of my other pieces. The thing that makes it unique is i don’t make lids for my pieces but this one I did. I don’t like making lids for my pieces but Ms. Imboden talked me into so I ended up making one. The reason that I am choosing to submit this one is because I love the way it turned out and it is one of a kind.
