Hand turned Nordic food bowl.

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Hand turned Nordic food bowl.
Category: Multicultural Art – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Dylan Frantz-Collins
School: South Anchorage High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

My teacher offered to let me start turning large pieces in during my first semester because he said I have a good eye for detail. I was pleased to hear that and of course took his offer of learning how to turn these pieces. I find a lot of peace while turning, and I tune everything out of my mind except the blank and the bowl gouge. People started giving me compliments on my work and I started gifting them to friends and family.

Hand turned wooden Nordic drinking bowl

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Hand turned wooden Nordic drinking bowl
Category: Multicultural Art – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Dylan Frantz-Collins
School: South Anchorage High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I watched my teacher spin these chunks of wood into pieces of art on a large lathe. I was interested in it, so I asked him if I could try. After a month I was able to turn out a bowl every few days, and every time I see my finished product, or anyones for that matter, I can’t help but to stare in awe.

Jellyfish

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: “Jellyfish”
Category: Mixed Media – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Jessica Fandel
School: South Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

As an artist I approached this project thinking outside of the box. The work and ideas that went into this sculpture were mercurial because the form and gesture of my sculptures are not from a model or photograph, but what I think they should like. Using other elements like metal, ceramic and glass made it more organic and diverse.

In the Sea

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: “In the Sea”
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Talon Burgess
School: South Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My goal for this piece was to create a functional every day object that makes the viewer want to see and learn more. I took inspiration from the ocean and all of its beautiful aspects, I started with an organic shape that reminded me of the oceans coral. I then added shells, seaweed and more and to finish it off I used natural colors to bring out the true beauty of the ocean.

Wolf Hunt

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Wolf Hunt
Category: Drawing – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Grace Harrington
School: South Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This was for an assignment using linear perspective and I guess I put my own spin on it. I tend to lean toward organic forms and shapes, so animals are usually my preference. I love wolves and these five are actually original characters that a friend and I created. It was exciting to use them in a project bigger than what I would typically do.

Analogous Landscape

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Analogous Landscape
Category: Painting – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Crystal Laganson
School: South Anchorage High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

My inspiration for this piece transpired when I travelled around and showed my relatives, who were from a hotter climate, the beauty of Alaska. We stopped by the Begich Boggs Visitor Center in Girdwood and took pictures. I vividly remember standing there, astounded by the scenery in front of me. It felt and looked so surreal, like it was from a painting in a museum. My color scheme to use analogous colors was a purposeful challenge for me. I had never done a specific scheme for my paintings before, so limiting my palette was definitely challenging, but the outcome of the piece turned out to be beautiful and satisfying.

Anxiety

April 18, 2019 ASAA

(2nd Place – Printmaking)

Title of Art Piece: Anxiety
Category: Printmaking – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Kylie Wallette
School: South Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I created this piece in my art class while we were working with relief printing. My intention was to create a visual representation of what it’s like to have an anxiety attack – head in your lap, drowning out the rest of the world and the cacophony of every other sensation around you. To do this, I traced an image of a boy with his head down and created lines and exclamation marks to represent the feeling of stress.

Title of Art Piece: Cherry Steph
Category: Drawing – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Hailey Gifford
School: South Anchorage High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I did a portrait of an extraordinary artist who inspires me to be better than I am! Her name is Steph Agaezi and I follow her on twitter. She uses an abundance of artistic liberties in her work so I decided it would be fun to draw her in my own style with colored pencil.

In many of my art pieces I shoot for create unique and beautiful textures mixed with inspiration from expressionists artist and their unique use of colors. This combination brings so much more dimension and layers to a piece. The texture of this piece, made up of many ridges and layers, were made with palette knives, textured squeegees, and brushes. White the paint is all acrylic on a 16’ by 20’ canvas.
