Dionaea Muscipula and Friends

April 1, 2018 ASAA

(1st Place – Textile/Fiber Design)

Title of Art Piece: Dionaea Muscipula and Friends
Category: Textile/Fiber Design – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Keriakia Hammer
School: Service High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

Given the subject of organic matter, I chose these specific plants to batik because although they may be beautiful, they are not commonly affiliated with the habitual subject found among artists of a decorous and innocuous composition filled with roses or daisies. Overall my goal with this piece was to show people something different that is both aesthetic but not customarily regarded as such.

I enjoy art for about the same reason I enjoy films and books so much; because it provides an interesting perspective on certain topics, allows the creator to express themselves, and because they can look really cool. I don’t think this piece means much at all, I just wanted to see if I could accomplish the same transparency/depth effects from watercolor landscapes with the batik process. But art in general means a lot to me, because I enjoy the feeling of artistic freedom and the ability to express myself in any way i choose; the same way any director or writer feels. I think that creating is just part of human nature, whether it be a story, a person, or a painting of a bunch of flowers in an open field.

Celtic Fibula

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Celtic Fibula
Category: Jewelry / Metalsmithing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Garrett Schwalber
School: Service High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

For as long as I can remember, I have had a really creative imagination. Throughout all of my life, I have created complex scenarios of epic voyages through space and time, fantastic quests in ancient mythological realms, and journeys to far off lands that few have been before. I guess you could say I am a bit of a nerd. But through all of this, the only way I have been able to share these experiences with others is through my art. My art is not stories or telling of these adventures; they are artifacts, symbols, and pictures of these fantastic places and times made real. The piece you see before you is a Fibula, an ancient Celtic pin used to hold a cloak or kilt closed in battle, at home, or just doing daily chores.

The chain on the bracelet is inspired from a pendent I saw in Scotland, I thought it looked elegant. The clasp on the bracelet is of my own design. The ball on the end is designed to fit into the wire on the underside of the ovule on the other end of the chain.

Diamond of St.Paul

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Diamond of St.Paul
Category: Jewelry / Metalsmithing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Jasmin Woods
School: Service High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My name is Jasmine Wilson, I’m a senior at Robert Service High school. I have taken every art class that is available at my school since my sophomore year at Service. While also taking art classes and doing art outside of school. I created this ring for my little brother. It is made out of pewter with an additional piece (a stone that appears to be a Pyroxene mineral) that I handpicked from black diamond hill on St. Paul Island (St. Paul is one of four volcanic islands located in the bearing sea.) This ring is special because of the stone, the stone is from St. Paul Island, it’s unique in its own way. It’s not the kind of stone that you can find when walking around when in Anchorage. It is also special because I do not get to go to St. Paul very often so I was very lucky to have been able to go then to make a ring with a piece with it.

Title of Art Piece: Legal Drug
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Bu Gyeom Park
School: Service High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

This drawing of my friend sleeping is inspired by my life in South Korea. Most of my friends were not getting enough sleep because they needed to study or participate in other activities…etc. Coffee helped us from falling asleep. Using only black color seemed to stand out how the situation feels in contrast to the vivid yellow background. The Korea in the art says: “ Coffee wake me up! I need your power!”

Vacation

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Vacation
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Keriakia Hammer
School: Service High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

This piece of art was inspired by my family’s winter break vacation to Hawaii. Both myself and my younger sister are the subject of this composition. The monotonous background, contrary to the expected emotion of excitement invoked by the simple thought of a vacation, depicts the overall gloomy feeling I had felt during this trip. The complementary colors used for myself and my younger sister’s bathing suits represent the very opposite personalities we possess and give great insight as to what those personalities might be based on the chosen hue. Overall that vacation was, in my eyes, a success, for it inspired my idea for this work.

Modern Mermaid

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Modern Mermaid
Category: Textile/Fiber Design – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Sabrina Urban
School: Service High
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

Growing up my favorite movie was Disney’s The Little Mermaid. As long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated by mermaids. My parents would feed into my imagination by taking me out on boat rides. Sometimes, if we were lucky, we would see a pod of dolphins jumping around our boat or a group of sea otters off in the distance.

As I grew older, my appreciation and respect for the wild life grew too. However, I also realized the damage that was being done to the beautiful wildlife by the thoughtlessness and greed of others. The waste we produce continuously increases, and impacts our precious wildlife.

This piece was inspired by events that are happening around me and the frustration I feel. The trash we throw in our ocean is harming every little kid’s mermaid.

Papa

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Papa
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Taylor Wade
School: Service High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I decided to draw my late grandfather. This photo was taken while he served in the Air Force, meaning he was somewhere in his early to late 20’s. To sketch and shade, I used graphite, more specifically a HB pencil and a 6B pencil. This picture means a lot to my family and I. Since he passed away from lung cancer when I was about four years old, I never got to truly know what made him such an amazing and wonderful man. From what my mother told me, we had very similar personalities, and my eyes would light up every time I saw him. If he was still alive today, I’m sure we would’ve had an amazing connection not only on a grandparent-grandchild relationship, but also on a wonderful friendship level. Drawing this portrait connected me to him in a beautiful way.

Shadows

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Shadows
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Alexander Maurer
School: Service High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

I chose to draw a sea shell for this project for many reasons. I found this shell on a beach one day in Hawaii and I really liked the shape and look of it. At first it was difficult to figure out how to draw such a small shell on a big paper. I stippled the shaded areas because I like how different lighting can make the shell look so different in many ways. Every time I moved the shell to find the right lighting, different shadows were portrayed across the shell. The spikes spiraling from the tip to the base of the shell and the little lines show the unique texture and form. Stippling was a great way to express these details and show how the shading is different all around the piece.

Colorful and bright artwork catches my eye. As an artist, I try to make my images realistic, yet using abstract colors. This piece is an example of color and realism. I have a fondness for using oil pastels because they allow me to achieve such rich hues in my work.

Valedictorian

Title of Art Piece: Valedictorian
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Maggie Smith
School: Service High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

For this collage I was inspired by good friend Haadiya Cheema who happens to be the valedictorian of my school (Service High School) for class of 2018. Even though she has this title, I only see her for who she is, as a friend. One thing I learned about Haadiya in this project is that she is simple yet complex. I was interested in doing a collage on her because I find her skin tone enchanting and her physique very elegant. Bedsides those attributes, I was really drawn in by the structure of her face and the texture of her hair.

What’s Around the Room

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: What’s Around the Room
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Sophia Berggren
School: Service High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This watercolor piece was inspired by my art teacher who gave me an assignment to paint objects in the classroom. I love expressing my love for art in painting, even in the most transparent ways. I find it so intriguing when an artist can create something that is viewed as facile, into something exuberant.
