My Own Backyard

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: My Own Backyard
Category: Sculpture – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Maria Pfundt
School: Petersburg High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

My inspiration for this project was to collect odds and ends laying around my house and make something decorative from parts of my families harvesting culture. I loved making items that many people would see as unpleasant and putting them into a useful and elegant centerpiece. I used deer antlers, a Japanese buoy, mason jar lids, candles, and epoxy to hold it all together.

Nature Embodied in Clay

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Nature Embodied in Clay
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Brynn Lister
School: Petersburg High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I took my inspiration for my art piece from the nature around me. Alaska is surrounded by vivid colors and many different textures. My blue bowl with sharp edges embodies the glaciers and the mountain tops with their sharp edges and gentle blue and white hue. My hushroom bowl focuses more on the forest areas of Alaska with its many different species of plants and animals. Lastly, I took inspiration for my mug by how when humans came to Alaska they had to bring in and incorporate the elements on nature into their lives in order to survive. My pottery pieces tell, in essence the story of Alaska now and long ago when humans first came to this land.

Artwork Dimensions: (3 piece series) largest measurements: 8" wide x 4" tall

Twisty Tunnel

Title of Art Piece: Twisty Tunnel
Category: Drawing – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Tatum Hagerman
School: Petersburg High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

My inspiration for this piece was to display an optical illusion with depth. It is based on the op art style with contrasting colors and ideas to create illusions for the eye. I used graphite pencils to contrast the bright white of the paper and blended the pencil out to give the illusion of depth.

Artwork Dimensions: 12" x 18"

River Take Me Home

April 17, 2019 ASAA

(3rd Place – Multicultural Art)

Title of Art Piece: River Take Me Home
Category: Multicultural Art – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Heather Berkley
School: Petersburg High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

My inspiration behind this piece is growing up in a town lacking my own culture. The paddle represents the eagle clan with an eagle feather that flows in the wind and a deer antler that makes an amazing sound when it hits the paddle. I also placed a piece of copper in the handle to make it stand out and catch the eye of people looking at it. For this paddle it wanted it to represent and portray who I am and what I stand for.

Artwork Dimensions: 5" x 36" x 1.5" thick
