The Beauty of Home

April 1, 2018 ASAA

(1st Place – Jewelry/Metalsmithing)

Title of Art Piece: The Beauty of Home
Category: Jewelry / Metalsmithing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Heather Berkley
School: Petersburg High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

My inspiration behind this piece is the beauty of home. We all have those certain memories of being home. For me it is the magnificent mountains, the elegant stars, and the calming ocean. To make this pendent I used two pieces of sterling silver and I cut out my design. Then used liver of sulfer to darken the background and make the waves stand out. I then soldered them together and polished it to make it really pop.

Octopus

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Octopus
Category: Jewelry / Metalsmithing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Julia Evens
School: Petersburg High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My inspiration behind this piece comes from the ocean. I wanted to create something that portrayed Alaska. The octopus that I made on this included two sterling silver 1″ pieces and cut out the design. I then used liver of sulfer to get the black touch to make the tentacles pop. Lastly I soldered them together, through a sweat solder process, and then polished.

Under the Sea

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Under the Sea
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Abbey Hardie
School: Petersburg High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My idea behind this piece was to play off what I though surrealism would be. I’m sure I’ve had a dream or two with the same visuals and almost matte-looking colors to them. I used colored pencil as well as some pastel with this piece because I wanted my colors to be even and solid or a smooth transitioning gradient for the sky.

self image

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Self Image
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Marissa Nilsen
School: Petersburg High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

Art has always been a way for me to communicate what I can’t say with words…

“self image” is a testimony and a farewell to the past 18 years of my life. Although the painting doesn’t look anything like me, it represents me in all the ways that matter; it reflects what I’ve been through, the sacrifices my family has made, my fondest memories and worst moments, as well as the opportunities and experiences I’ve been able to take advantage of, both living in Southeast Alaska and spending a year abroad in Europe in 2016-17. From the worst of circumstances to the best of experiences, these past 18 years have shaped me into who I am today. It’s impossible for me to put into words how grateful I am for my past, and how excited I am for the future. Where words fail, art speaks.

Cosmos

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Cosmos
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Tiare Simbahon
School: Petersburg High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This painting was inspired by my curiosity and social media. For a while now I have been thinking about the process of making an acrylic pour. The project materials surprised me. I always imagined to make a pour painting, you just dump a bunch of acrylics on a canvas but now I know there is so much more that goes into it. This piece consists of silicon and latex based floetrol assisted by acrylics. The results of my painting are exciting and cosmic.
