Close Up

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Close Up
Category: Painting – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Sapphira Flint
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I chose to make three paintings of the same person, all very close up views of the face and hands. I took my own reference photos again, so I could manipulate the composition and highlight the structure of the human figure, which is the overall theme. Not only was I focusing on the human figure, but I created a close up and personal perspective of the subject, which makes both the subject and viewer feel more vulnerable.

Cazorla Window

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Cazorla Window
Category: Painting – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Mario Serrano Sanchez
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My painting is based in a reference picture of a typical Spanish window I took myself at my family’s hometown which is in the Sierra of Cazorla natural park in Andalucia, Spain. The technique I used was acrylic paint on canvas. I also helped myself with tape for creating nice straight lines. The biggest challenge was to create a smooth gradient with this type of painting, which took me some time. I like this design because of the minimalism and the contrast of the bright white wall and the dark window.

Illusion of Life

Title of Art Piece: Illusion of Life
Category: Mixed Media – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: David Aragon
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I possess the passion to design characters, characters that are ingeniously imaginative. Not only expressive by the means of how they look but how they would carry out life. My piece’s composition gives the impression that it’s not just an average drawing you set in a frame, but the illusion of life.

Landscape of Earth and Sky

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Landscape of Earth and Sky
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Linnaea Alverts
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This wheel-thrown earthenware vase was thrown with Oregon red clay, water etched in the leather-hard stage, and glazed with white and grey cone 06 glaze. This piece was created with the intention of representing the relationship between earth and sky; clay from the earth was used to create a vessel with cloud patterns etched in a landscape design implied by dip-glazing techniques. The mountain portion of the horizon was intentionally left without glaze to expose the raw clay beneath, which further connects the idea of earth and sky.

Ceramic Casserole Dish

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Ceramic Casserole Dish
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Summer Wolsterman
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My piece was carefully thought out and created to be lightweight, functional, and appealing to the viewer’s eye. The glaze was applied to make the lid and the dish to be uniform but not exactly the same. The knob on the lid to my casserole dish was created so it won’t slip out of the user’s hand and is easy to use. The handles are placed directly across from each other to make the dish easy to lift. The lug handles are sized appropriately so that they function comfortably with oven mitts on.

Rebirth

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Rebirth
Category: Painting – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Sophia Dick
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

Rebirth, acrylic on canvas, 45.7 cm x 60.9 cm

This painting represents someone becoming a new person every day, with new memories and experiences different from the previous. The old versions kept there symbolize that while you grow, it’s important to reflect on what shaped you in becoming the person you are now. This is a relatable piece that ties into my theme, New Beginnings. I was inspired by Peter Max, who often uses the triadic color scheme as well as surrealist concepts.

Ladrillos

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Ladrillos
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Alma Reyna
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

For this project I created small clay bowls and pots as well as animals that I will paint to look like Alebrijes. Both these clay figurines are commonly seen around Mexico the clay bowls and pots can be seen everywhere from candy containers to souvenirs, Alebrijes are seen in more touristic cities and are bought as souvenirs. I wanted to show a chipped abandoned building with clay “bricks”, in Mexico especially where I lived there are a lot of old buildings left from families who couldn’t stay there and left for the US or other places.

Depression

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Depression
Category: Painting – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Garrett Creer
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

For my painting I chose to do the emotion of depression. I studied the style of the impressionist and interpreted the type of brushstrokes in my piece. I used a human form to show the sort of uncomfortable and restless feeling while leaving the background blank to represent the somber loneliness of how depression feels. The red streaks in the background resemble the people we have lost to depression.

Title of Art Piece: Fear
Category: Drawing – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Shayna Madruga
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I show through black and white drawings on light brown paper the fears shown in different situations people have gone through. The people look like light is shining on them to represent the words,” fear brought to the light”. I know everyone has experienced fear. My drawings are just some of many fears that happen in Alaska that I think should be known like: abuse, loneliness, abandonment, trapped, and bullying.

Appearance Toxicity

April 16, 2019 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Mixed Media)

Title of Art Piece: Appearance Toxicity
Category: Mixed Media – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Anesia Pavilla
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

My artwork is titled Appearance Toxicity. This art piece was inspired by Poster Boy and Kenny Scharf. It was created to show how media’s expectation on a woman’s body can affect them. The mirror drawn, Mirror of Lies, shows the woman looking in that she is fat even though she is only a sack of bones in reality. There is also an invisible demon floating around the woman that you cannot see in the mirror telling her unkind things and harassing her on her appearance. An example would be that it tells her that she should use the make-up products to cover her ugliness. There is also the magazine clipping that are words and images. The words are unkind and the images are some of the expectations pushed on women. Over all this was created to make people aware of this problem that some women have.

Waning Anthophila

(Honorable Mention – Sculpture)

Title of Art Piece: Waning Anthophila
Category: Sculpture – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Rheanne Bouchard
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

For this sun catcher, I wanted to communicate that humans are the main reason as to why the bee population is dwindling. I used different shades of yellow and orange glass for the honeycombs because they are reminiscent of honey and the insects that make it. Two of the bees are made of clear glass, showing that what used to be there is now gone. Some honeycomb pieces are mirror so that they reflect the viewer, showing them that humans are the cause of the vanishing bees.

Blooming

April 16, 2019 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Multicultural Art)

Title of Art Piece: Blooming
Category: Multicultural Art – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Bailee Petersen
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

Carolyn Cohen, a batik artist, used her artwork to bring awareness to social issues. This piece is a tribute to school shooting victims. I used a traditional Indonesian tjanting tool and hot wax to create the outline of a handgun with flowers exploding out of the barrel, instead of bullets. Those bold flowers represent the teenage minds that were just starting to bloom. I express my belief that individuals should take a position of love when responding to animosity.

Arizona themed Agateware Set

April 18, 2019 ASAA

(2nd Place – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Arizona themed Agateware Set
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Caitlin Sargeant
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

Throughout this process of making this set, I combined two different colored clays to create this series of agateware. I colored the blue clay by wedging in Mason stains to a white clay body. I made all pieces light weight and flared the rims to make them more functional. After making each piece I used a metal rib to scrape off the excess clay to show the beautiful swirls within the clay. I experimented with varied sized flutting tools with different designs to expose the layers of colored clay. I hand pulled each handle and placed them accordingly so the weight would be balanced in the user’s hand.

Title of Art Piece: Trumpty Dumpty’s Great Fall
Category: Mixed Media – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Ruby Wright
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

My marker collage represents the Democrats’ (donkey) smashing a wall that Trump (Humpty Dumpty) can’t build by himself. Artist Statement:

I created this art piece to give the viewer a sense of imagination and surrealism.
