Category: Sculpture – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Alma Reyna
School: Palmer High School

Artist Statement:

Starting this multiples project I had never worked with clay and learned as I went. Katharina Fritsch inspired me with her use of myths and color this helped me when sculpting and painting the hands. I choose to sculpt hands, painted black, white, and grey, because they are very expressive, when formed in a certain way they give off the feeling of fear and desperation, the color is similar black is not a happy color, this connects with my theme of unnatural.

Rejoy

(2nd Place – Painting)

Title of Art Piece: Rejoy
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Sally Carr
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This painting is a part of a series of portraits I am producing. This past year I have been participating in a portrait group and have really taken to the act of painting live models. Being able to see the depth, light, color, and personality of the model is so much more satisfying then from a photo reference. I was honored to paint Rejoy Armamento live this past winter. It is truly an experience to paint an individual with all of their quirks and personality right in front of you. Rejoy was an amazing women her confidence and beauty emanated off of her and I attempted to express that.

Cascading Butterflies

April 4, 2018 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Sculpture)

Title of Art Piece: Cascading Butterflies
Category: Sculpture – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Aidyn Dervaes
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This piece of mine is about an innocence of love. Particularly pertaining the emotion that we call ‘butterflies’. That flushed feeling of a thousand insects swarming in your belly. On this dress there are 953 butterflies that represent this feeling. I chose light and cheerful colors for my dress to communicate a sense of purity. I was inspired by the scenery of Colorado, where I spent some time this summer, watching the butterflies and hummingbirds prompted the initial ideas of my piece.

A Change for the Better?

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: A Change for the Better?
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Jazmyn Caulkins
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This piece is a commentary on how drastic of a change your life makes as you make your way from childhood to adulthood. This change can be clearly seen in the types of books you read. I chose to take cut outs from books that would represent what the person might care about in the different stages of their life. The cut outs are arranged inside an outline of a person at different stages in their life. The arrangement is in the shape of a thumbprint, my thumbprint to be specific, because this is something very personal but is also a problem every human in existence faces. The child figures body language is carefree while the adult figure is slumped and depressed from the weight of the responsibilities that they now carry. The colors around the child are bright and playful to go with their nature. The adult is dripping a dark purple that represents the troubles and responsibilities that come with being an adult.

The Goat Man

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: The Goat Man
Category: Ceramics – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Anesia Pavilla
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

My slab box creation had a beginning of a few ideas. My choices were an Eragon based box, Alice in Wonderland based box, A kitten box, a Japanese mythical creature box,  two Halloween inspired boxes, a baking themed box, a sewing themed box, a Kesride based box, and A Mayan mythical creatures box. I, after hard decisions, named my top three: The Eragon themed, the sewing themed, and the Mayan themed boxes. From there I asked the class which one the liked best and the outcome was the Mayan themed box. The handle is a Huay Chivo (a goat man) and the others are just Mayan based symbols. My choice of colors for the box was based off of my classmates remarks that it looked demonic, so I played along.
I really enjoyed the fact that I was able to express one of my many sides, the darker and creepy side. Along with the fact that my classmates saw that I could created something that could send chills down a person’s spine(and look demonic), didn’t really change how they viewed me.
That there is my process to creating my art piece dubbed as “The Goat Man.”

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: A Walk on the Other Side
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Madison Reid
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This piece was inspired by the question of what the definition of “beauty” would be if everything we’ve known about beauty our whole lives disappeared. I like to think the woman featured in my painting is on a journey, searching for her personal definition of “beauty” in another universe.

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: ?¿?¿
Category: Printmaking – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Krysta Walsh
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

The intent of my prints was to create a huge message physically while keeping it unknown. This way, the viewer has to stop and think about what’s being presented. Hopefully they are confused and ask themselves, “What is the Big Message?.” My hope is to provoke the viewers’ thoughts and emotions with confusion, curiosity, and frustration. I refuse to define this “Big Message “ considering, everyone has their own.

Something

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Something
Category: Sculpture – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Linnaea Alverts
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This piece, which I am calling, “Something”, consists of; clay pots that were wheel thrown off-the-hump, repurposed copper pipe, sticks, rocks, sea shells, and other found “junk” that I am giving a second life through art. This piece connects to my theme, “less made into more” through both the physical process and the symbolism. As I use clay, a material that is almost as basic as the Earth itself, I am making it into something more complicated, a bowl or pot. This piece symbolizes how the trash we leave behind and the art of the natural world are all connected (hence the string) and there is a precarious balance between the health and pollution of Earth (hence the balancing of the mobile). When someone looks at my piece, I want the viewer to feel a call to take care of the Earth, but also be reminded that old can be made new again.

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Guardian
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Sophia Dick
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

In this I attempted to create a sense of peace and stability by the use of horizontal line and warm lighting. I wanted to invoke a sense of wonder and imagination, using bright and vibrant colors whilst still keeping it calm and down to earth. This piece was made using pastels, a medium that is versatile yet can just as easily become muddied and gross. However, pastels provided the texture crucial to making this piece come together. This scene was based off the game “Breath of the Wild” of the Legend of Zelda franchise, something that has really captured my heart at the moment.

Seasonal Activities

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Seasonal Activities
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Brianna Jensen
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

In my piece, I wanted to portray the common activities one can do in the outdoors. Specifically, the activity that correspond with each season. In this case, I put a duck for hunting in the winter, while a fly rod represents fishing in the summer. To communicate this seasonal difference within each object, I organized them in a clockwise rotation that the viewer can follow. My inspiration for this piece came from the vibrant colors that Jasmine Jan uses in her pieces. By using vibrant colors that worked well with each other, I hoped to communicate a light feeling of excitement through my piece, as these activities are my favorite things to do in my free time.

Guilt

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Guilt
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Robin Hoyt
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

Guilt’s style is inspired by the surrealism and expressionism movements. It represents how guilt feels; like cream-of-mushroom soup, uncomfortable, and full of regret and sorrows. I used a more monochromatic color scheme to make the piece feel more dreary and heavy, and the figure’s posture is depicted as submissive to their own guilt and pain.

Look at Me

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Look at Me
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Sapphira Flint
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

For this piece I started of with a photoshoot inspired by Andy Warhol and Geoffrey Jones. The model is a well known person in our school but I wanted the photos to show a more personal side of him. The drastic pink and purple light gives off a sense of femininity. Both elements together represents crumbling stereotypes and expectations that make one vulnerable to society.

Stuck in the Clouds

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Stuck in the Clouds
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Jina Malone
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

It was my biggest dream as a kid to climb the tallest mountain and drink the clouds. I used that idea to create a piece about empowerment and self-fulfillment. The juxtaposition of the baby head and the adult hand is meant to symbolize achieving your goals using your own devices. I used fantasy colors to support the dreamscape I created. The textural contrast was something I wanted to emphasize, in order to attract the viewer’s eye.

What’s That Smell Self Portrait

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: What’s That Smell Self Portrait
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Garrett Creer
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

I was doing a self portrait made out of charcoal for a school art project, but I felt I needed to incorporate something that expressed something about who I am into it. So just to make the portrait go the extra step I decided to add a little bit of my funny side and I think it really brought out a more lively and human aspect to the self portrait.

Blue Watercolor Flower

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Blue Watercolor Flower
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Shayna Madruga
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

The inspiration behind my watercolor flower was the bright and vibrant colors in the flower and how the the contrast was shown in the picture but the main inspiration was the way my teacher described it and showed her love for that style of art which then made me want to be able to experience it for myself. The message behind the artwork is that u can always find happiness and joy even when there is sadness all around. The process used to create this artwork was I started out with stretching the watercolor paper then sketched out the proportions of the flower then slowly used the flat wash and wet into wet to layer and create details to bring the flower to life.
