Different Attention

April 5, 2016 ASAA

MG_7936

Title of Art Piece: Different Attention
Category: Sculpture – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Jheaniquea Lucero
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: I made this multiples art piece that is similar to Antony Gormley’s The Field. The central figure is being judged. The figures in the crowd are the judgers. In the crowd, the people with arms are spreading rumors or making upset gestures. The other shapes without arms are the listeners; they listen to the ‘arms’ and judge the center person. This piece is based on the alienation people feel who are homosexual and transgendered. I chose clay to give two different views, birds-eye and ground level, because the work is three dimensional. The dark red symbolizes hatred or anger. The pink represents transgender identity and the rainbow refers to gay/lesbian sexuality.
Artwork Dimensions: 19.5 wide x 15.5 deep x 5″ tall

Friends Grow Apart

April 5, 2016 ASAA

4.-Friends-Grow-Apart
(1st Place – Textile / Fiber Design)

Title of Art Piece: Friends Grow Apart
Category: Textile/Fiber Design – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Ally Barker
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Friends Grow Apart, Ally Barker, 2015, 78.74cmX27.94 embroidery thread, wood, and nails,
For this project I wanted to illustrate how childhood friends often grow apart from each other. I was inspired by my own memories of my closest friend in elementary school, and how this is the case with our relationship. I chose to use embroidery thread and the knotting technique used in friendship bracelets to emphasize the subject. I chose to use color symbolism to show how we had things in common but came from fundamentally different backgrounds which is part of why we grew apart.

Myself

April 16, 2016 ASAA

self-portrait
(3rd Place – Drawing)

Title of Art Piece: Myself
Category: Drawing – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Annie Wang
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: I chose to draw a charcoal self portrait. I found charcoal to be a fairly easy and versatile material to use. With careful shading and tone, I could make stark contrasts with the darker values against the lighter ones, make small details, and apply a certain quality to my artwork that I couldn’t obtain with any other medium. I like how charcoal can make any drawing seem abstract and melancholic to any subject given. It tends to demonstrate a sort of meaning, a sorrowful ambiance, because of the dark blacks and soft grays it uses. I believe that by drawing my own face, a person that i can be assured I know well enough to draw accurately, both in character and personality, I can show a better depth of emotion. I showed a darker side of my personality, one that’s not normally shown in my daily life, complementing the dark sentiments of the material, as well as relating that inner feeling, that sort of deeper meaning, to my artwork.
