The Normals

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: The Normals
Category: Drawing – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Alija Cook
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

Many characters from The Normals came from my dreams. I drew character designs for a couple of them, just doodles mostly, and I ended up grouping them all together because of how weird and bizarre they were. The title is supposed to show irony because the whole family is strange, but they all want to be “normal.”

Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Aisha Malik
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

This is a poster design I entered into the Latino Film Festival contest. While I didn’t win the contest, it was good professional experience. I created several different designs, changing the layout and color scheme. I liked this one the best.

Title of Art Piece: Roller Derby
Category: Painting – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Gabriella Rodriguez
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

Roller derby is my life! I think the comic-book sensibility of this piece brings to mind the nostalgic fun of the 70’s, which is what roller derby is all about. I am doing an AP Art portfolio with a concentration on comics, and have been trying out different styles.

In this piece I was trying to capture my niece’s feeling of security as she held my hand after returning from her exploration of the dark mysterious woods.

Memories

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Memories
Category: Photography – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Kalie Redmon
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I did it where the person is falling and while they are falling they are seeing there best memories in bubble form. Thinking of the past makes us think of the good and bad times, but when we are in trouble or down we rely on the good ones. That is what is happening in the picture, the person is in trouble so their best/good memories are there in front of them, wishing they could go back to them.

Movement of Dance

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Movement of Dance
Category: Photography – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Kendra Underwood
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

Photography is capturing the essence of a moment. This piece catches the movement of dance, but also the rhythm of the music and the passion of dance. I know what it is to be the dancer twirling about the floor, and I find that capturing that emotion for someone else to see and feel is pure art.

Deep in the Woods

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Deep in the Woods
Category: Mixed Media – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Aisha Malik
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

Recently, I’ve been experimenting with different mediums and subjects, and doing a comic page is the perfect way to combine all that into one single piece. I’ve found myself really intrigued by drawing complicated backgrounds with a hint of fantasy, thus leading to this artwork. I started this comic by sketching and inking the black lines on large bristol paper, and then scanned it and colored it digitally, using an iPad and AutoDesk Sketchbook. This project was a very fun experience and I hope to do it again soon.

Light Facetation

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Light Facetation
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Jasmine King
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I began working with stacked pots and designing them using several different masking techniques. I liked the visual impact that came through the glazing, but wanted to give the form more structural interest, so I began using the lacing technique of carving through the form to create negative spaces that would allow for a light and airy piece. This particular piece reminds me of the shapes in the ocean that reflect and refract light through the shallow waters.

Archaeological Germination

Title of Art Piece: Archaeological Germination
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Rahab Porter
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I have been working on a concentration of pottery that combines traditional wheel thrown ceramic forms & vessels with organic hand-built appendages that seem to emerge or grow out of the pots. This particular piece is inspired by spring and the time of year when seeds find their way to open and plants find their way through the soil to find their way to the light.

Tumbling Patella

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Tumbling Patella
Category: Sculpture – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Claire Granger
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I have been very interested in playing with balance in my sculptural work. I also think that the dance between positive and negative spaces in sculptures is important, and am excited when the sculpture is visually different and interesting depending on which side you’re looking at from, and which way the light passes through these spaces.
I like using ceramic coils to create my sculptures because they allow me to create the feeling of movement in a structure, and to create pieces that seem off-balance, even though they stand soundly on their own.

Title of Art Piece: Downtown Girl
Category: Photography – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Mallory Orenstein
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I love capturing fleeting moments in time with a camera lens, cementing them as art. My best friends and I were taking an early Saturday morning walk through downtown Fairbanks on a snowy day, learning that a dirty, empty parking garage can be just as beautiful as anything.

Category: Printmaking – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Gabriella Rodriguez

Artist Statement:

This is a self-portrait wearing my favorite shirt. I think it captures my ironic approach to life, and my sense of humor. I love the printmaking process. I made prints of this image in many colors but traditional black and white looks the best, I think.

Architect’s Teapot

April 17, 2019 ASAA

(3rd Place – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Architect’s Teapot
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Clare Hanneman
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I really enjoy the contrasts between geometric shapes and positive and negative spaces in my pots. I wanted this pot to be very angular because I was inspired by some Japenese architecture that I had seen. The richness of layering glazes added to the clean, exacting lines of this piece. I am really pleased with the overall visual impact of this teapot.

Interruptions

April 19, 2019 ASAA

(1st Place – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Interruptions
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Clare Hanneman
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

When I first started designing with geometric shapes I focused mostly on surfaces of pots. With this piece, I was interested in playing with the entire form and exploring how I could break up space with a geometric shape that created positive and negative space. I am happy with how striking the cube is as it interrupts the flow of the pot, and how the deep color of the glaze flows into the contrasting light glaze in the center.
