Tradition

April 1, 2018 ASAA

(1st Place – Printmaking)

Title of Art Piece: Tradition
Category: Printmaking – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Jenna Watson
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This is a reduction print. I printed each color, and then carved more of my print block, and then printed the next color, etc. The image can no longer be re-created, even though it’s a print, because the original image is forever altered. Thus the print becomes an original. I spent months creating this image. The final touch was to add gold leaf in areas to make reference to Japanese art traditions.

Word Craft

(1st Place – Sculpture)

Title of Art Piece: Word Craft
Category: Sculpture – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Franzisca Malenfant
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

I crafted a ship to make a statement about young students and adults sailing through life. No, surprising as it may be not everyone floats until death, sometimes theres wrecks and sometimes the ship may form holes. But no matter what art introduces new craft and creativity to the mind and body, thus every ship is unique but beautiful. Every person is a ship just making it through the ocean of life.

Two Roads Diverged

April 2, 2018 ASAA

(2nd Place – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Two Roads Diverged
Category: Ceramics – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Rahab Porter
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I actually had a dream about this piece, so I wanted to create it. My dream took place in the Alaskan wilderness…there were different paths in the woods and I was hiking. There were lots of animals in the dream as well. When I got into the pottery studio I made the round pot and then started attaching the clay paths…and i saw the antler in a drawer with feathers and shells…I thought the antler handle tied the piece together. The small shells as accents by the rim just seemed to fit. I had a lot of fun creating this piece.

Persistence, Patience & Practice

April 3, 2018 ASAA

(3rd Place – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Persistence, Patience & Practice
Category: Ceramics – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Clare Hanneman
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I have made several pieces where I’ve enjoyed carving out geometric patterns in the pot’s surface…this is my favorite so far. I really planned out the form on the wheel and I think the diamond patterning and deep carving makes the piece stand out visually. It took a lot of specific pattern planning, and hours of carving to get this effect on the entire vessel. I think the carved peace make the glazes really come to life in rich blues, greens and browns.

(Honorable Mention – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Estuaries
Category: Ceramics – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Claire Granger
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I do a lot of sculptural clay work and recently have been exploring coil forms. I really like playing with the element of balance with coils, making the pots look like they are leaning or turning…creating the hint of movement in a solid form. This piece reminded me of the movement of water, like rivers merging. I also like leaving openings in the piece, so light dances in and around the pot.

Jardine`re

April 5, 2018 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Jardine`re
Category: Ceramics – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Abbie Flynn
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

As an AP 3-D student this year I have really enjoyed working with my concentration: stacked wheel-thrown pots with thick slip design. I love the challenge of creating evenly crafted and measured stacked forms on the wheel, and then decorating the forms on the outside with thick slip designs and patterns for the glazes to dance around on. As far as the glazing goes, I love the process of spraying 4-8 layers of glazes in different combinations to create different effects. On this piece I love that from a distance it reads like antique browns and olives, but up close it shows rich hues of browns, purples, blues, greens and sandy tans.

Undulations

Title of Art Piece: Undulations
Category: Ceramics – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Abbie Flynn
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

In my work with stacking wheel thrown larger pots, I started to try to alter the pieces by pushing the pots from the inside out with my hands. Then I wanted to exaggerate the hills and valleys by using my hands and fingers to move the clay on the outside of the pot…when I was done, it reminded me of the ocean waves and the sandy ocean floors. So. I glazed it with layers of ocean blues and sandy tans to finish my vision.

Am I Blue (Self-portrait)

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Am I Blue (Self-portrait)
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: November Ott
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

I love to draw! I have been drawing all my life. I feel like Art is an essential subject in school, even though it’s an elective. Drawing for me is a vacation from the hectic world of school. This self-portrait shows me as the serious student I am. I picked blue for the background because it’s my favorite color, not because I am unhappy. I think of blue as a peaceful color. I am generally a pretty happy person.

Student/Artist’s Name: Catherine Davis

I just learned to bind my own sketchbooks and I can’t stop making books! I have made sketchbooks or journals for all my siblings. This summer my family is going on an extended road-trip and I am excited to take my journal on the road and draw the great outdoors. I love the idea of creating a book full of sketches where I made every part of the artwork including the book.
