Title of Art Piece: Untitled
Category: Ceramics – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Sara Novy
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Recently I have been able to work with porcelain, and I’ve really enjoyed what this clay body has allowed me to explore. I’ve made a series of vases that challenged my wheel throwing skills. This is one of my favorites, because it’s very light for such a large vessel, and it has a very pleasing form. I really like the marbled effect from using red clay with the porcelain body, and I think the glazing really completed this piece.

Buma-1

Title of Art Piece: Denali Sunrise
Category: Ceramics – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Ashton Buma
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: I came to Alaska 10 years ago, and I have always been inspired by its majestic beauty. When I was little, I would anticipate traveling from Fairbanks to Denali to admire nature and the wildlife within the National Park. Alaska has also inspired me to pursue a career in Environmental Biology. I felt that I needed to give something back to the land that has given me so much. So I present Denali Sunrise as a tribute to what intrigues me most: Wild Beauty.

Tentacle Sensation

Title of Art Piece: Tentacle Sensation
Category: Ceramics – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Kris Redd
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Having lived in Hawaii for 5 years, I have come to love the ocean. I am convinced that if I could live in the sea, I would! This piece was inspired by one of my favorite marine animals. The octopus is an unique and intellectual creature. They are curious beings, so it would not be abnormal to find one exploring an abandoned pot on the ocean floor. That’s why I created this octopus exploring a bowl, instead of just having it stand independently. I hope I have done justice to these amazing creatures!
