A People Disrespected

April 4, 2017 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Mixed Media)

Title of Art Piece: A People Disrespected
Category: Mixed Media – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Alyssa Madrid
School: Kodiak High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I was inspired by the Dakota Access Pipeline and Standing Rock’s fight against it. Standing Rock is a Sioux Native American reservation in North Dakota, the pipeline will essentially run through the reservation’s fresh water sources most likely contaminating their drinking water. The construction of the pipeline will and has run through “protected” sacred Native American burial sites, ruining them forever. Native Americans from all over the Americas have joined together to peacefully fight the pipeline together. Being Alaskan Native and Native American myself, I felt a need to do something to help my sisters and brothers fight the pipeline, so I used my art skills to create this piece.

Balance

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Balance
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Kyle Mauer
School: Kodiak High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

For this piece, I was inspired by elements of the 1964 earthquake and tsunamis in Kodiak, Alaska. Kodiak’s tenacious citizens stood strong and rebuilt their community after the tragic events. This piece represents the world and its unification. I decided on a monochromatic color scheme to show that even though there is darkness and despair in the world, we are all connected and there is light and joy to stabilize the imbalance of harmony.
