Li’l Sis

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Li’l Sis
Category: Drawing – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Riley Crocker
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

Our assignment was to do a portrait from real life, or a photo we took ourselves. The hand in the photo is actually mine. I really like the gold flecks in my little sister’s eyes, and her freckles, so I zoomed in. I matted it myself, and chose the mat to bring out the gold in the eyes.

Student/Artist’s Name: Lyliana Mahanyu
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

I really like how the temokku glaze came out just the right purple-brown color and didn’t fill the texture. I didn’t want it too shiny. I want to take ceramics again!

Self-Portrait Color

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Self-Portrait Color
Category: Drawing – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Molly Marie Nelson
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

For this self-portrait assignment, I experimented with colors in the medium I love best – highlighters and crayola markers! I loved every individual stroke and blending the colors. I also love making both the colors harmonize and complement each other – even neutralizing colors is fun. I often design characters, and do self-portraits on my tablet, but this is riskier – more spontaneous. Some of the anatomy is off, but I believe it adds to the personality. It’s one of my favorite portraits I’ve ever done.

Mom

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Mom
Category: Painting – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Mariana Bell
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

We were assigned a portrait, and got to choose our medium. I love this picture of my mom – her character really comes through. A lot of people think its a self-portrait because she looked just like I do now, when she was young. I chose oil-sticks so I could blend for the translucent skin tones, but I ended up using mostly a sepia palette, I think to give it a timeless feel.

My Creation

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: My Creation
Category: Painting – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Madelyn Boman
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

Drawing the contour line hands was really fun. I’ve always liked Michelangelo’s creation scene, from the Sistine Chapel. I looked up photos of hands and practiced a few, until I got what I wanted. I did the energy-colors of the wet-on-wet background first, so, if it accidentally got into the hands drawing, I could wipe it off without ruining the soft-blended skin tones. Then I outlined the hands to bring them forward more, and cropped the frame, to emphasize the more active, reaching hand.

Self-Deconstructed

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Self-Deconstructed
Category: Drawing – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Addison Mallott
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

After our Drawing from Observation project in Drawing 1, our teacher said all drawing, no matter how realistic, is actually an abstraction. She showed us a deconstructed drawing of a cow, by De Stijl artist, Theo Van Doesburg in 1918. I really wanted to try it! She also showed us work from previous Advanced students who abstracted their self-portraits in 4 panels until they were simplified into cartoon characters. This was an exciting experiment for my Independent Project.

Farewell

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Farewell
Category: Painting – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Sunny Tveten
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I’m a senior, and our school mascot is a bear. I’m super excited about going off to college but I’ll miss this beautiful, sheltered, wilderness place I call home. I worked on this mural in the storage room for over 2 months. It started off as an assignment for human proportions. Getting the light right for the sunset was the biggest challenge. I learned a lot about backlighting.

Folk Fest Backdrop

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Folk Fest Backdrop
Category: Mixed Media – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Lisa Eldridge
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I tried to capture elements of Alaska: wood, forget-me-nots, berries… It’s the 45th year of our local Juneau Folk Festival, so I created a 3D “45” and decorated it like a flower arrangement. The wood panels are like a necklace, or energy radiating from the Festival…

Self Portrait by MMN

April 4, 2019 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Self Portrait
Category: Drawing – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Molly Marie Nelson
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I do a lot of “self-portrait” sketches in marker – its my favorite medium.
It felt good to bring this one beyond a sketch, to a finished piece. The subdued lighting focuses on the expression of apprehension.

Punk Bust

April 17, 2019 ASAA

(3rd Place – Sculpture)

Title of Art Piece: Punk Bust
Category: Sculpture – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Steven Ireland-Haight
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I learned a lot doing this project. I did two more, very different busts after this one, but this is perhaps the most expressive. I worked really hard on the proportions. I wanted his ribs to show, so he doesn’t look very healthy. It took a long time to decide whether to glaze or paint. I wanted the skin to look pale and realistic. In the end, I used a sponge and applied translucent layers of different colors. It’s ceramic, acrylic paint, and aluminum foil over the jewelry. The fish-hook is real.

Title of Art Piece: A Loss of Self
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Claire Scott
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

Every once in a while, it’s good to experience loss and ask what about you remained consistent, instead of focusing on the loss alone. I don’t think this man asks that of himself very often.
