Cultural Mash-Up Characters

April 1, 2018 ASAA

(1st Place – Communication Arts/Graphic Design)

Title of Art Piece: Cultural Mash-Up Characters
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Claire Scott and Josephine Engstrom
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

I developed these characters to represent different cultural interests: my favorite era in history, Victorian, my favorite exotic culture, Japanese, a traditional culture of my family, Billy the Kid and the Wild West, and current Pop-culture, represented by a Kardashian taking a selfie. They share a common element of fitted armor. It is done in alcohol markers.

Shelf Octopus

April 5, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Shelf Octopus
Category: Sculpture – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Steven Ireland-Haight
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

When building this, I was intrigued by the form of an octopus, and I wanted to make something that would actively sit on/slide off a shelf in a home. I got very detailed, even making indentations on the suction cups that sit unseen under the tentacles.

Artwork Dimensions: 6.5" x 12" x 10"

Grey Wolf

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Grey Wolf
Category: Ceramics – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Steven Ireland-Haight
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I made this during our animal mask making project in Ceramics class. I wanted to create an accurate rendering of a grey wolf. I even made several test-tiles so the glaze would be just right. The biggest challenge was that this was such a large scale slab project.

Sunflowers

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Sunflowers
Category: Printmaking – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Julianna Kawakami
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This is a monotype. Painting watercolor and gouache on a sheet of acrylic was interesting. I worked on it for several days, and it was frustrating when it dried. It was cool that you could erase things, and move them around, before committing to a print. The paper had to be just the right dampness, soaking overnight, to pull a good print. I even got a good ghost-print!
