(2nd Place – Multicultural Art)

Title of Art Piece: Great Gray Owl
Category: Multicultural Art – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Evan Rodriguez
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

After studying the ovoids, U-forms, trigons and S-curves of the Northwest Coast Native art-style, we were tasked with using the technique to portray an animal or figure. I specifically chose the Great Grey Owl, posed in a dynamic manner inspired by the character works of Ken Sugimori (Primary Artist of the Pokemon Franchise).

Greek Theatre Expression Mask

April 3, 2017 ASAA

(3rd Place – Sculpture)

Title of Art Piece: Greek Theatre Expression Mask
Category: Sculpture – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Summer Putman
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

In English class, we studied the plays of Ancient Greece. Actors would wear the masks so the audience, from far away, could see which character was in the scene at that moment. The masks were exaggerated to show the expression of the character. My mask is exaggerated to show a state of shock and confusion of the character because my favorite part of the ancient greek plays were the plot twists that left everyone shocked. It is modeled after my own expression of shock that I made in a mirror. I formed the clay slab upon my own face so it would fit.

Komodo Dragon

April 5, 2017 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Komodo Dragon
Category: Ceramics – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Cody Weldon
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

When I was a kid I was fascinated by dinosaurs, and since they have been extinct for 65 million years, the komodo dragon is the best I can get. My ceramics teacher assigned a slab mask using an armature, and I immediately thought of the Woodland Park Zoo, where visiting the komodo dragons is a must. The scales of a komodo dragon sort of round, so I rolled little clay balls to mimic this texture. I also got the added bonus of leaving my fingerprint on each ball giving the mask an even more reptilian look. I only applied one coat of glaze so that it would be patchy and make the skin look more like a real komodo dragon.

Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Sophia Puliafico
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I’m inspired by the stunning Alaskan landscape surrounding me.
I frequently see this view of a channel and islands through treetops. I wanted to express the vibrancy I experience as a local Alaskan, while pushing myself to use new colors, mixing my own black in a new medium.

Basin Road Bungalow

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Basin Road Bungalow
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Summer Putman
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I love unique buildings, ones that feel as though people thrive and make memories there. There is a house like this in my town of Juneau, on the road I walk to my favorite hiking trails. I call it the “Basin Road Bungalow” because it’s a house that looks like a home, a place that would be comfortable and natural to live in. Every time I pass, I need to stop and observe. Though painted a deep green, the house gives off a cozy ambiance. I tried to capture the feel of the house in my painting by making the inside of the house a warm orange color – a contrast to the dark green woods surrounding the house.

Pleasant Skies

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Pleasant Skies
Category: Photography – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Tristan Osterhaut
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

I took this photo from a viewpoint on the Juneau-Douglas bridge. It was in the afternoon and
lighting was perfect. The sky was a bright, brilliant blue and filled with clouds that made a variety
of patterns and added contrast to the upper part of the composition. The mountains helped
frame the lower portion of the photograph and the ship gives scale to the sky.
I think this photo shows how big our Alaskan landscape is, and how closely our town (Juneau) is
tied to tourism.
