This piece is based off the idiom: “A Penny for your Thoughts” and mechanizes humans and their thought process. The gears, levers, and coin slot make the bust into a machine and it also comments on the value humans place on money.

Blossom

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Blossom
Category: Ceramics – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Vianne Sarber
School: Homer High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

Nothing seems to bring more inspiration than the becoming of spring. The new year brings new promises and new ideas. Spring is often associated with the symbols of new beginnings, and flowers, the bringers of beauty and hope. Artists tend to create pieces inspired by this season because it represents more than just the ending of winter, it’s the idea of turning over a new leaf. The coil pot represented is telling of new ideas. In my case, as a freshman in high school, this is unequivocally a new experience. Even as my freshman year is almost over, I still am making new discoveries and finding new ideas. Constantly, students must blossom. My first ceramics class has reinforced many ideas, but none more important than to look at a different angle, see the bright side of things, and start over. All these linking back to the symbols of spring. Overall, the creation of this piece is inspired by new beginnings.

Sleepy City

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Sleepy City
Category: Ceramics – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Daisy Kettle
School: Homer High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

My favorite memory of Seattle is walking back to our minivan rental car, from a Macklemore concert at Key Arena. It was a clear December night, and the city was quiet. We walked through Seattle Center and around the Space Needle without seeing a single person. Although I love a city’s nightlife, there is something very special about a quiet city at night in December. I wanted this piece to perfectly capture that moment with the stars above and the bright office buildings in every direction. Our project was to create a piece that fits together with something else, or that you make in pieces. I chose a butter bell because I thought it would perfectly show all of the buildings and the feeling of night.

Tea Set

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Tea Set
Category: Ceramics – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Jacob Davis
School: Homer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

Inspiration wise, I just wanted a tea set to have around the house and really liked the shape of English style teapots and thought it would be a good challenge making the long, curved spout. Originally the teapot started as a jar; which is why it has the flangeless lid, but after consideration of the finished shape, it seemed better and more useful to me as a teapot. At the time, I had also made and fired a set of teacups as practice for production work. I glazed them experimentally, layering different glazes together, which turned out really wonderfully. So, to connect the teapot with the set, I used the same glaze style- using a blue and green glaze under a clear, smooth, glossy glaze; but this time with a lighter, matte blue.
The pieces in this set were huge steps up in the progression of my ceramic skills and are great symbols that represent that development.

Just Hold On, We’re Going Home

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Just Hold On, We’re Going Home
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Antonio Fuentes
School: Homer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

My inspiration was Albrecht Durer, and Drake’s album, “Nothing was the Same.” I used chalk pastel on paper to make the lighter colors pop. I wanted it to feel like a painting done by Albrecht Durer, but have my body fully facing forward, verses Drake where he was facing to the right. I have myself facing away from the sun as if I’m leaving and never looking back. The jewelry is supposed to signify beauty and unity; as it is okay to wear jewelry, but it is vain to flaunt it around.

River Reds

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: River Reds
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Paige Jones
School: Homer High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

I’ve lived in Alaska for my whole life, and fishing is a big part of our culture here in Alaska, so I decided to paint a fish in a net. For this mixed media assignment, I had a lot of various materials available to use. I experimented with using different acrylic mediums and gels to thicken the paint. I then cut slits in my canvas and threaded a fishing net through the painting, so that it looks like the fish is caught in the net.

I have never really seen an artist portray a bird as weird as an emu, so I thought that I would. I was inspired by the work of Robert Rauschenberg to use mixed media.

I’ve always been fascinated by the infinite number of stars when looking up at the night sky. I tried to capture the randomness of the stars and the more classic, but unrealistic, look of the milky way.

Cry Wolf

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Cry Wolf
Category: Sculpture – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Maggie Alston
School: Homer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

With this piece, I was given the prompt to sculpt an idiom. Ever since I was little, I have loved animals and I always try to incorporate them into my art whenever I can. My idiom is “cry wolf” and I chose to illustrate this with a ceramic wolf bust with an accentuated tear on the face. I painted my piece with acrylic and attempted to blend and create a rugged wolf look.
