The Trial

April 2, 2017 ASAA

(2nd Place – Printmaking)

Title of Art Piece: The Trial
Category: Printmaking – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Emily Inama
School: Homer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I’ve always been mystified by the human face strcutre and I wanted to integrate that into my block printing project. Emotionally, we are able to convey what is most important to our human existence through our faces.

Venetian Canal

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Venetian Canal
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Lauren Evarts
School: Homer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I created this painting from a photograph that I took in Venice, Italy. I really wanted to focus on texture and light composition in this painting. I tried to melt the top of the buildings and mix them into the sky in order to portray the nostalgic feelings of warmth and tranquility that I felt while I was walking around the smaller streets of Venice.

Purple Dusk

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Purple Dusk
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Izabelle Hagge
School: Homer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I completed this piece during a landscape unit in my art class. In my painting, I tried to effectively incorporate space as well as light and dark. I really enjoy this piece because it perfectly encapsulates the nature of where I live in Homer, Alaska- the crystal blue sky, green forests, and where the purple fireweed mirrors the alpenglow on the mountaintops.

Colour me Orange

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Colour me Orange
Category: Printmaking – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Asia Angeles-Hanson
School: Homer High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

I chose to make a block print of a fox because I wanted to make an animal that lives within Alaska. I chose the fox out of all the other possible animals because their colours are soft and beautiful. I also chose the fox since not many people think of foxes when they think of Alaska, and I think it’s nice to mix things up a bit.

Edith Miller

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Edith Miller
Category: Sculpture – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Samantha Jacobsen
School: Homer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This mask is a part of a set between my friend Audrey and myself. Wilfred and Edith Miller are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary! Building the facial structure of each character was the hardest part. We had a hard time making the characters look aged but still joyful. Once I started painting, it really came to life. We then created a video of the couple in action, which gave them more personality.

Secret Succulent

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Secret Succulent
Category: Ceramics – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Paloma Ramirez
School: Homer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

When I was given a unity project by my ceramics teacher, I immediately thought of a group of succulents- something that I have loved forever. I was hoping to make a tightly packed pot of plants that could come apart. I worked with pinch pots, coil pots, and slabs in order to achieve this goal. The secret compartment that is in the planter gives the owner a place to store objects under a facade of a solid art piece; akin to a safe behind a painting. The ceramic piece was fun to make and I am happy with how it turned out.

Aquatic Plates

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Aquatic Plates
Category: Ceramics – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Samantha Jacobsen
School: Homer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I chose aquatic animals for my plates bcause it is hard not to when living right next to the ocean. I used a green stain, and while using it, I was warned that it would either turn red or green because of the copper in it and the reactions with the oxidation and reduction in the gas kiln. Luckily, two came out green and two came out red with that unexpected look, it made the plates much more unique.

Artwork Dimensions: 7 inches in diameter (Each)
